Mosley vs. Alvarez: Canelo Will Stop Sugar Shane with Early Knockout

Tim KeeneyJun 7, 2018

"Sugar" Shane Mosley will be looking to extend his successful career against Saul "Canelo" Alvarez, but Canelo will quickly end those aspirations with an early knockout tonight.

Mosley, the huge underdog, has a chance in this fight, don't get me wrong, but what he has to do to win is going to leave him wide open against the methodical Alvarez.

Sugar Shane, 40, doesn't punch as consistently as he used to, but he still possesses quite a bit of power even though he's a natural lightweight. Even though he doesn't have the same type of natural size and power that Alvarez has, Mosley packs a very solid punch.

Of course, it's been his speed, defense and overall work rate that has gotten Mosley this far in his career, but those characteristics have dropped dramatically during his last few fights. They were the reasons he lost to Floyd Mayweather Jr., Manny Pacquiao and drew Sergio Mora.

He's going to have to use his power effectively, but he also can't get out-worked.

That's not good for Sugar Shane.

Still, Mosley is a storied fighter and should give Alvarez some problems, as Sean McDaniel of boxingnews24.com puts it.

"

This could be Alvarez’s toughest fight if Mosley can bring the same game that he did in beating Antonio Margarito three years ago in January 2009. But that’s going to be tough, because Mosley isn’t fighting at the same level in recent fights than he was back then. He more than anyone knows why he’s not fighting hard, but he’s going to have to find a way to get beyond his physical problems if he wants to capture Alvarez’s World Boxing Council title and put some new life in his career.

"

Therein lies the problem for Sugar Shane. As mentioned earlier, if he brings a combination of power and quantity of punches he is capable of, I love his chances of upsetting Alvarez.

But he's not 30 years old anymore. He's 40, and his skills have noticeably dropped off in the last few fights. That means he's going to be susceptible against Alvarez.

And Alvarez—who is undefeated and has secured a knockout in 75 percent of his fights—knows how to take advantage of susceptible fighters.

Make sure you don't turn this fight on late, because you might just miss the whole thing if you do.
