2012 NFL Free Agents: Latest News on Top Players Available

Jun 7, 2018

Now that the 2012 NFL draft is in the books, the attention of teams across the National Football League has turned back to the remaining free agents as clubs attempt to round out their rosters. Here's a look at the latest news about some of the top remaining free agents and the squads that may be interested in bringing them on board.

Atogwe, Clark Visit Kansas City

The Kansas City Chiefs wasted little time after the draft bringing in two veterans who could add some much-needed depth to the roster. The team brought safety Oshiomogho Atogwe and tight end Dallas Clark in for visits Tuesday according to a report in the Kansas City Star.

Clark, 32, has garnered surprisingly little interest on the open market since being released by the Indianapolis Colts. After suffering through two straight injury-marred seasons, some had begun to question whether or not the 10th-year pro would play again (per NFL.com's Albert Breer). However, Clark had 100 catches for over 1,100 yards as recently as 2009. If the veteran can convince Chiefs brass that he's healthy, then he could afford the team some valuable depth behind starter Tony Moeaki, who missed the entire 2011 season with injury.

Atogwe slogged through a similarly stained season in his one year with the Washington Redskins, managing only 60 tackles and three interceptions while missing three games and parts of several others with an assortment of maladies.

The seven-year veteran hasn't topped 80 tackles since 2008 and has missed time in two of the past three seasons. The 30-year-old did lead the NFC in interceptions in 2007 and would provide some veteran depth behind starters Eric Berry and Kendrick Lewis, both of whom are recovering from injuries as we enter the 2012 season.

Benson Bucking to Bolster Raiders Backfield

After watching several running backs find new homes this offseason without much interest in his services, running back Cedric Benson has apparently decided to take matters into his own hands. ESPN's John Clayton recently reported (per Rotoworld) that the eighth-year pro, who gained 1,067 yards for the Cincinnati Bengals last year, sees himself as an excellent replacement for the departed Michael Bush as Darren McFadden's backup with the Oakland Raiders.

"

"Benson is hoping to maybe land with the Oakland Raiders," Clayton said. "... There's an opening there and he's hoping to fill it." Unfortunately, per Clayton, Benson has received "no phone calls so far this week."

"

It appears that Benson may have to bide his time before receiving that phone call from the Raiders, as Steve Corkran of the Contra Costa Times tweeted Tuesday that Oakland may be interested in bringing in another veteran back for a look first:

"

“@Eazy_Estevez: @CorkOnTheNFL any chances of Raiders bringing in Cedric Benson.?” -- Yes, but not sure why. And, Ryan Grant might be first.

— Steve Corkran (@CorkOnTheNFL) May 1, 2012"

Neither the 29-year-old Grant, who rushed for 559 yards for the Green Bay Packers in 2011, nor Benson pose any threat to McFadden atop the depth chart for the Raiders, as neither back is nearly as explosive a runner as McFadden. However, McFadden has missed at least three games in each of his four NFL seasons. With only Mike Goodson and Taiwan Jones behind him on the depth chart, the team may be looking to add an additional ball-carrier.

Young to Work Out for Bills

Finally, after failing to add a quarterback in the draft, the Buffalo Bills have apparently turned to free agency in order to address the backup position, The Buffalo News reported that the team will bring in former Tennessee Titans and Philadelphia Eagles signal-caller Vince Young in for a workout Wednesday.

The 28-year-old Young, who threw for 866 yards and four touchdowns with nine interceptions in three starts a season ago, would reportedly compete for the backup job in Buffalo behind starter Ryan Fitzpatrick, who signed a lucrative long-term extension last year.
