WWE WrestleMania 29: 10 Bold Predictions for Next Spring's Big PPV
It wasn't even one month ago that we watched a really good WrestleMania 28 pay-per-view.
But it was maybe 10 minutes after that show ended that I thought to myself, "Hmm. I wonder what's gonna happen at WrestleMania 29."
The WWE obviously pulled out all the stops for this year's PPV in Miami, so I'd fully expect the same to happen when they invade MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey in 2013.
The spotlight is bigger and brighter up there, and Vince McMahon is going to want to deliver the goods in front of the New York/Jersey area fans and all the fans from across the world.
I know it's way too early to predict what we're going to see when the WWE takes over the home of the Jets and Giants, but that's not going to stop me from trying.
Here are 10 bold predictions for WrestleMania 29.
10. Rex Ryan And/or Tim Tebow Will Be Involved with the Show in Some Way
1 of 10Considering where WrestleMania 29 is taking place, there are a ton of options for possible celebrity appearances at the show.
But it would only be fitting that the fans at MetLife Stadium get an appearance from at least one of two of the biggest sports names currently in New York: Tim Tebow and Rex Ryan.
Both Tebow and Ryan are two of those sports figures who you either love or hate, and thus, would be perfect for pro wrestling.
Ryan can come across as a good football coach or an arrogant, obnoxious one, while Tebow is like the John Cena of pro sports--some think his act is a charade, but others respect the hell out of him.
While I don't know if Tebow's faith would prevent him from working with the WWE, I could definitely see the company expressing interest in working with him for WrestleMania 29.
Oh yeah, and Ryan, too.
I may be totally off on this, but I guess we'll have about a year to wait and see.
9. The Tag Team Titles Will Actually Be Defended on the Main Card
2 of 10If you go back and look at the last five WrestleManias (and probably beyond that), you'll notice that the WWE Tag Team Champions hardly ever defend their titles on the main card.
Since WrestleMania 24, only WrestleMania 26 featured a tag team championship match, and that bout (The Big Show and The Miz vs. R-Truth and John Morrison) lasted less than four minutes.
Meanwhile, twice during that span, the WWE Tag Team titles match was relegated to the dark match.
Yet, for some reason, I think that we're actually going to think the titles defended on the main card at WrestleMania 29.
Why? Well, I guess it's because we're seeing at least some effort being put into the tag team division at the moment.
Sure, it's not even close to great, but if we continue to see tag team wrestling on a consistent basis like we have been since WrestleMania 28, then the tag titles should matter a lot more by this time next year.
Perhaps this is just wishful thinking, though.
8. Money in the Bank Will Return to WrestleMania
3 of 10The absence of the Money in the Bank match is something that I think has really hurt WrestleMania over the last couple of years.
The WWE likes to put on Mania matches that feature a bunch of competitors, but since MITB moved to its own pay-per-view in 2010, it hasn't been able to fill the gap.
At WrestleMania 27, the MITB match was "replaced" by that awful match featuring Big Show, Kane, Kofi Kingston and Santino Marella taking on The Corre, and at WrestleMania 28, it was "replaced" by the 12-man tag team match featuring Team Teddy vs. Team Johnny.
The latter one wasn't bad, but it damn sure wasn't on the level that a Money in the Bank match likely would have been.
Thus, I think that the WWE will come to their senses at some point this year and realize that WrestleMania needs Money in the Bank to dramatically improve the undercard and the overall quality of the show.
WrestleMania is MITB's home, and that's where it belongs.
7. Vince McMahon Will Play a Major On-Screen Role in the Show
4 of 10Vince McMahon--well, the Mr. McMahon character--has been off of TV as a full-time character since July 18, 2011.
He did make a random appearance on Raw in October of the same year, but for the most part, he's been completely absent for roughly nine months now.
I don't see that lasting all the way until WrestleMania 29.
While Vince is slowly ceding control to Triple H both on TV and behind the scenes, it's almost inevitable that McMahon returns at least once a year to get involved in a major angle.
Just go look back at 2007-11, and you'll see that McMahon was supposedly written off of TV every year during that span.
But guess what? He returned to TV every year during that span.
I get that the trend has to end at some point, but I don't think we've reached that point yet. Vince will return to TV in his "Mr. McMahon" character and play a major role at WrestleMania 29.
Given the continuous power struggle between John Laurinaitis and Triple H, I'd say that this could definitely happen.
6. Cody Rhodes Will Compete for a World Title
5 of 10The booking of Cody Rhodes continues to baffle me.
He held the Intercontinental Championship for eight months, then lost it and was subsequently booked like a loser. But then he regained it at Sunday's Extreme Rules pay-per-view.
The way that creative has booked him has been spotty at best, but still, I can't help but be impressed every time I see him on TV.
Rhodes is the future of the WWE, and it's only a matter of time before he moves on to the main event for good or perhaps even becomes a dual champion.
We saw the WWE give Sheamus and Daniel Bryan a chance to compete for a World title at WrestleMania 28, and at WrestleMania 29, I think Rhodes will be the young up-and-comer who's challenging or defending a World title.
He has a lot of potentially great main-event feuds just waiting for him, and I think he gets one on the grandest stage of them all in 2013.
5. Batista Will Wrestle on the Show
6 of 10When Batista left the WWE in 2010, I never thought it was the end of the road for him.
Even though he parted ways with the company on his own terms and has been very outspoken about it since then, he's a still a big-name draw who never received a proper sendoff.
I've maintained that he would be back at some point, and given how critical he has been of the WWE, I think he could be working us to set up for a possible comeback.
In fact, WrestlingNewsWorld.com reports that Batista is indeed interested in returning to the WWE, so I think it'll happen at some point within the next year.
If that is actually the case, he'll play a huge role in the build to a WrestleMania and at the pay-per-view itself.
Personally, I'd prefer to see Batista come back as a heel for a major Mania feud with someone like Triple H, but we'll see.
4. Most of the Big Matches Will Each Feature at Least One Part-Timer
7 of 10If you listen to all the speculation and rumors out there, then you know that WrestleMania 29 is likely going to feature a lot of part-timers.
The Undertaker, Brock Lesnar and The Rock are all expected to be in headlining matches, and there's a chance that guys like "Stone Cold" Steve Austin, Triple H, Chris Jericho or even Batista could be, too.
You know what that means? Not a lot of space for up-and-coming talent.
We could see a couple of matches that exclusively feature part-time legends and something like four of five matches that feature at least one part-timer, which could be good or bad, depending on how you look at things.
Obviously, the WWE will get a ton of criticism for this because it will be seen as "relying too much on names from the past."
But if it draws and makes Vince McMahon some money, he will continue to do it.
3. None of the Rumored Main Events Will Happen
8 of 10The rumored trio of main events for WrestleMania 29 is as follows: John Cena vs. The Undertaker, The Rock vs. Brock Lesnar for the WWE Championship and "Stone Cold" Steve Austin vs. CM Punk.
But guess what? I don't think that any of those matches will actually happen.
We all know that creative's plans change on a daily basis, and it's far from a guarantee that any of these matches will take place, much less all three of them.
I'm still not sure that the WWE would want to do Brock/Rock because both of those guys are likely leaving the company after WrestleMania 29, and Austin has sort of shied away from a possible match with Punk recently.
I think Undertaker vs. Cena is probably the most likely to happen, but I wouldn't be surprised if the WrestleMania 29 main events looked more like this instead:
"John Cena vs. "Stone Cold" Steve Austin
Brock Lesnar vs. The Undertaker
The Rock vs. CM Punk
"
I could be totally off as well, but I'm still fairly confident that the incredible rumored trio of main events is not something we're actually going to see.
2. John Cena Will Either Perform as a Heel or Turn Heel at the PPV
9 of 10Yeah, I said it.
I know that a John Cena heel turn is looking less likely now than ever after his huge comeback against Brock Lesnar at Extreme Rules.
But I do think that Cena is going to turn heel at some point before his career ends, so why not within the next year?
While I understand that it's a huge risk for the WWE and one that the company is likely unwilling to take, I also think that it must happen.
I know, I know: "It's never going to happen, Drake."
But hey, if it actually does, I'm going to look pretty damn good come WrestleMania 29 time.
1. It Will Be One of the Best WrestleManias Ever
10 of 10Even if WrestleMania 29 doesn't feature that awesome trio of main events, I still think it's going to be a fantastic show, and yes, possibly one of the best Manias ever.
The WWE is going to have a great mix of huge part-time names (The Rock, Brock Lesnar, The Undertaker, Triple H, etc.), current top stars (John Cena, Randy Orton, CM Punk, etc.) and an incredible core of young up-and-comers (Daniel Bryan, Cody Rhodes, Dolph Ziggler, etc.).
The success of WrestleMania 29 is going to depend largely on how the creative team books the buildup to the show and the actual show itself, but all the ingredients are there for just that to happen.
The WWE will be better positioned at WrestleMania 29 than it has been over the last several years to deliver a stacked card from top to bottom.
We've got legends, the big names of today and some possible surprises on the way that could make WrestleMania 29 an amazing show.
As long as creative team doesn't screw it up, WrestleMania 29 will be one of the best Manias in WWE history.
