Evaluating Adam Schefter's 2012 NFL Draft Teams Open to Trading Up and Down

Sigmund BloomApr 26, 2012

It's draft day and visions of first-round trades are dancing in our heads. With mere hours to go, ESPN's Adam Schefter hit us with this on Twitter:

"

Teams open to trading up if right player is there include Jacksonville, Buffalo, Philadelphia, San Diego, New England, Green Bay.

— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) April 26, 2012"
"

Teams open to trading back for the right offer include Minnesota, Tampa Bay, Miami, Seattle, Dallas, NY Jets, Detroit.

Let's break down how likely it is that these teams either trade up or down:

UP

1. Philadelphia: They've got the ammo. There is a clear No. 1 DT, not to mention elite cornerbacks. The Eagles are never afraid to move in the first. I have them jumping up for Fletcher Cox.

2. San Diego: A.J. Smith is another who doesn't sit on the sidelines when it comes to draft-day deals. The Chargers could be coveting Alabama S Mark Barron.

3. Green Bay: Ted Thompson's trade-ups are few and far between, but Clay Matthews seems to have worked out, so perhaps he could go back to the well to get Shea McClellin or Courtney Upshaw to play opposite Matthews.

4. New England: Never say never about New England, but it just isn't Bill Belichick's style. There is a lot of talk today that they have inquired into the price of Seattle's No. 12 pick. Barron or Syracuse DE Chandler Jones could be targets.

5. Buffalo: First a report that they wanted to get Matt Kalil, but GM Buddy Nix laughed that off today. Maybe if Cleveland loses out on Trent Richardson and wants to sell No. 4 at a discount. I doubt it happens.

6. Jacksonville: I hope Gene Smith is wise enough to not try to trade up for Justin Blackmon.

DOWN

1. Minnesota: Has a team ever seemed so desperate to trade down? I have them swapping with Tampa in my final mock, and I would expect we sweat this one out down to the last second.

2. Seattle: The fact that the Seahawks pick is so hard to make when you write a mock shows how attractive a trade down must be for a team with so many potential targets.

3. Dallas: The Cowboys have been creating smokescreens for weeks now. I have them trading up, but Jerry Jones could just as likely be aiming to trade down.

4. Tampa Bay: This only seems to make sense if Matt Kalil is there and both Trent Richardson and Morris Claiborne aren't. We can't count that possibility out, but I see the Bucs trading up before I see them trading down.

5. Detroit: I have the Lions trading up, but if they really like a second-tier corner or pass-rusher, they could deal out of the first and get their target.

6. Miami: If the Dolphins aren't set on Ryan Tannehill, this makes some sense. Michael Floyd or Quinton Coples are big-time talents at need positions, so No. 8 remains valuable even if the Dolphins don't take Tannehill.

7. NY Jets: Their board is missing a fourth, but I don't see a regime in a win-now window trading down out of the top 20 with such great defensive talent there around 16. Trade up more likely.
