NBA Rumors: New Jersey Nets Will Reportedly Pursue Kevin Garnett in Free Agency
The New Jersey Nets seem as desperate as ever to acquire a big name star as they head to Brooklyn for the 2012-2013 season. Colin Stephenson of NJ.com reports the Nets' interest in acquiring Boston Celtics PF, Kevin Garnett:
"What the Nets are thinking— reportedly — is that they need to upgrade the roster and power forward is one place they feel they can do better. The team reportedly plans to chase after Boston’s Kevin Garnett as they try to add star power for when they move into the Barclays Center.
"
KG is still a solid big man, as evidenced by his 16 points and eight rebounds per game this season. But at 36, the fruits of this signing would be short-lived.
It appears that the Nets are willing to do anything to keep Deron Williams with the organization. I don't blame them, Williams is an amazing player.
He is also set to be a free agent and it appears the Dallas Mavericks may represent the Nets' stiffest competition for his services.
The Nets' brass deserve credit for potentially pulling out all the stops to keep their star. This is something many teams are criticized for not doing.
Still, Garnett turns 36 in June—is that a big enough acquisition to convince Williams to sign on for the long haul?
I don't think so.
A Nets team with Garnett, Williams and Marshon Brooks isn't a serious contender. Williams will likely have offers from teams closer to contention, as will Garnett.
This predicament is a fallout from unsuccessfully attempting to acquire Dwight Howard before the trade deadline. That was originally going to be the team's main bargaining chip in re-signing Williams.
With that idea extinguished for now, Garnett could represent Plan B. The only problem here is that KG is a significant drop-off and everyone—including Williams—knows it.
