WWE: If Legends' House Doesn't Get Picked Up by Syfy, What Happens to It?

Sharon GlencrossJun 7, 2018

Legends' House, WWE's latest reality show, looks to be in a precarious position. The programme—which puts a bunch of wrestling veterans, including Roddy Piper, Sergeant Slaughter and Gene Okerlund, in a mansion and lets them run wild—was initially intended to be on the WWE network.

However, with the beleaguered channel's launch being continually pushed back, talk of it airing on Syfy (which airs SmackDown and has shown ECW and NXT in the past) this year instead has since been thrown about.

Alas, nothing has seemed to come from this discussion. As of this week, nothing Legends' House-related has been announced for SyFy's upcoming season—an ominous sign, perhaps, considering various names related to the show appeared on last week's legends-heavy episode of SD. If there was any place to make the announcement of a slot on the channel, that was it.

SyFy's reluctance to pick up the programme may be understandable. For one thing, it's a wrestling show and doesn't have much to do with the science fiction genre, their usual content.

OK, sure they show SD but that is a proven ratings commodity and worth branching out for. With Legends' House, however, there's no guarantee the concept will take off with viewers.

The network would be risking irritating their fanbase (who may already be growing irked by the proliferation of wrestling programming on a network supposed to be centred around the science fiction genre) for a programme with limited appeal anyway.

Let's face it: a show that focuses on wrestling stars for years gone by may be struggling to get even die-hard wrestling fans to watch, never even mind casual fans. All things considered, it's a tough pitch.

So, assuming SyFy doesn't pick it up, where will the show end up?

Well, the obvious line of thinking would be that it eventually airs on the WWE Network as originally intended. However, as noted various times on this site in the past, the proposed network has been troubled by a litany of problems and it is far from guaranteed that it will be launching any time soon—or ever, for that matter.

There could be another TV deal, but it's difficult to see who would take it. USA Network? Almost certainly not. Their revival of Tough Enough last year delivered anemic ratings and that had a far more promising concept and a bigger and more relevant cast (Steve Austin and Trish Stratus) than Legends' House does.

Potentially some smaller network like WGN (who aired Superstars in the past) would be interested, but that would also mean the show would be relatively low-profile and not garner the sure fire ratings the company had hoped for.

Worst case scenario Legends' House could end up being shown on WWE's new and improved YouTube channel—but this would surely be a waste. Legends' House probably wasn't cheap to put together, and the company will want to make the most of their investment by showing it on television. It would also be a huge blow for morale: Legends' House was supposed to be the big new show on WWE's big new network, not throwaway programming on YouTube.
