In the past, Romero has struggled against the Red Sox going 4-6 with a 7.12 ERA in 13 starts against Boston during his career. He turned things around yesterday allowing three hits, two walks and struck out five in 8.1 innings.
He hit one small bump in the third inning when he gave up three singles and one RBI. That would be the end of that, though, for Boston. Romero pitched well until the ninth inning when he was taken out.
Toronto manager John Farrell brought closer Sergio Santos in to finish the job. Santos had blown his first two save opportunities, but managed to have success striking out Kevin Youkilis and getting David Ortiz out on a ground ball.
Romero consistently threw strikes and drastically cut down the amount of walks that he used to give up to Boston in the past.
He had strong and solid command on the mound and had great success against Boston. That win will be a large boost in Romero's confidence, and for the team.
Toronto's pitching, offense and defense are all coming together. The Blue Jays are headed for a great 2012 season.
