Brock Lesnar Is the Best Choice of Opponent to Face Undertaker Next Year

Sharon GlencrossJun 7, 2018

As most will know by now, Brock Lesnar returned to WWE last week after an almost eight-year absence from the company.

In his first move, the former UFC Heavyweight Champion attacked John Cena in the middle of the ring and brutally F5’d him, much to the delight of the rabid anti-Cena crowd in attendance.

Brock’s first program back will now accordingly be with Cena after from their altercation on Raw, with their first singles match taking place at the Extreme Rules pay-per-view later this month as announced last night), but what can be expect of him in the future?

Per recent reports, Brock has signed a lucrative one-year deal and will, therefore, be sticking around until WrestleMania 29 in New Jersey. Unless the company can persuade him to stick around—and it seems unlikely camera-shy Brock will want to stick around long term—this this event will seemingly be Brock’s swansong from WWE.

And it is at Wresltemania 29 that, ideally, Brock would take on The Undertaker and attempt to end the dead man’s legendary 20-match winning streak.

That would make sense in a great deal of ways.

There has been a great deal of anticipation and excitement for over a year now about a potential bout between Lesnar and The Undertaker—essentially ever since the two had their famous confrontation after Brock’s match against Cain Velasquez at UFC 121.

It was a fantastic piece of marketing that quickly went viral and excited wrestling fans everywhere, who loved the idea of this “dream match.”

Many speculated the two would have their match at WrestleMania 27 the following year, but it appears Lesnar’s UFC contract was simply too big a stumbling block to get beyond (for the record, Dana White was very disgruntled at the prospect of a fighter still under UFC contract competing at a WrestleMania event).

Returning to now, most fans will be deeply disappointed if Brock’s year in WWE passes without some sort of altercation or angle with The Undertaker. Even WWE’s booking time, misguided as they often are, cannot fail to realize this. The fans want to see The Undertaker take on Brock Lesnar, and WWE should give the fans what they want.

And, really, who else is there for Taker to face? He has already taken on Triple H twice (and as great as their bouts have been, nobody really needs to see them battle a third time). Same goes for HBK. There’s not really anyone else that fans are clamouring for the veteran to take on at WM either.

Sure, many have thrown out the idea of a Cena/Taker match, but at this point it remains to be seen how such a bout can help Cena’s career. After all, he’s just got out of one WM match where he was vociferously booed out of the building; does Cena, WWE’s purported top babyface, really need another one? He certainly doesn’t.

Maybe Taker/Cena will make a great Mania match somewhere down the road, but for the sake of Cena’s floundering babyface run, it shouldn’t happen anytime soon.

So, all things considered, Brock seems to be the best candidate for the match with Undertaker next year. Their match would provide the perfect combination of expectation, excitement and genuine real-life emotion.

There would also be the hope that any match between the two would be high in wrestling quality. Despite being old, worn down and wracked with injuries, Undertaker has a habit of delivering on the big stage (for the past four years his WM bout has been a Match of the Year candidate).

For his part, come WrestleMania, Brock will have had some more time to relieve himself of any ring rust he may have and he can be expected to deliver a good performance.
