Dynasty Dilemma: Fixing My Mistake
Ron JohnsonMay 10, 2007
"The world loves conflict. Conflict loves controversy. Therefore, the world loves controversy."So we're clear: This is not about Randy Moss or Tom Brady here. This is about me admitting a mistake and correcting it.
Boston Celtics
Before the Bulls ruled the 90s, there were the Boston Celtics. For a good chunk of the second half of the 20th century, Boston owned the NBA. I didn't intentionally omit the Celtics; frankly, I'm not even qualified to talk about their old school days, but I have the utmost respect for what the team accomplished. While the Red Sox spent decade after decade fighting off the curse of the Babe, the Celtics were keeping their trophy case well stocked.
Montreal Canadiens
You can't talk about the Celtics without talking about the Canadiens. The Habs couldn't get enough—every time you turned around, the team with the big "C" on its chest was hoisting Lord Stanley's cup. Though their last championship came in the 90s, Montreal fans have kept the team's tradition alive.
UCLA Bruins
Who says college teams can't be dynasties? Not John Wooden, that's for sure. During Wooden's tenure in Westwood, the Bruins dominated the NCAA Tournament. To this day, UCLA is the only school to have won double-digit basketball championships. The Wooden Era made the coach a living legend. Dynasty? I think the Wizard's Bruins deserve that title.
If I've omitted any teams, please feel free to add them in. The Patriots could be as good as the Celtics down the road. But to call them a dynasty now just doesn't feel right for me.
I can't even call the Lakers of the Shaq/Kobe Era a dynasty. But I can call the Boston Celtics a dynasty. I can call the Dallas Cowboys (who won four Super Bowls) a dynasty. I can call the San Francisco 49ers, who won five, a dynasty. The Chicago Bulls? Dynasty. The New York Yankees? Dynasty.
The Patriots?
Almost there.
I still don't like the Pats, but I'll give them their due: They're good. They remind me of the 49ers of old, back when it was Rice and Montana. As far as Moss goes? If he does live up to the hype, then the Brady-Moss show could possibly be the evolution of Montana-Rice.
For those who are still upset after it took every ounce of energy in my body (and every ounce of beer in my office) to say something nice about the New England Patriots, I leave you with these simple words of advice:
Get off your high horse and be happy that Boston at least has one dynasty to be proud of.
