MLB Rumors: Second Basemen Nearing Well-Deserved Extensions

Rob GoldbergJun 3, 2018

Ian Kinsler and Brandon Phillips are close to extending their contracts, and for two of the best second basemen in the league, it is about time.

After giving first basemen Joey Votto a monster deal, the Cincinnati Reds are now looking to lock up the person to his right.

According to Jim Bowden, the team has offered a five-year contract worth $62.5-65 million. Phillips might be looking for more years, but it is likely that this deal gets done.

Although the veteran turns 31 this season, he has proven to be one of the best second basemen in the league and is extremely valuable.

Phillips has hit at least 17 home runs in each of his six seasons with the team, and his career-high .300 batting average helped earn him his first Silver Slugger last season.

That will look nice on the mantle next to three Gold Glove awards.

With the Reds looking to win now as well as maintain the future, extending a leader like Phillips is a great idea.

Similarly, the Texas Rangers should be happy to make sure their second basemen stays put.

Kinsler is working towards a deal that would give him $14 million per year for five years, in addition to picking up next year's option.

Although he is not as good on the defensive end as his national league counterpart, he is a year younger and provides more power.

The problem has been consistency, as Kinsler has struggled to repeat his .319 batting average from 2008.

At his best, however, he helps the Rangers form one of the best lineups in the majors.

Quality second basemen are hard to find.

Phillips was one of only three at the position to bat .300 or better last season. Kinsler was one of two to hit 30 home runs.

General managers should have no problem giving up the money to keep these great players on their team.
