WrestleMania 28: Which Direction Can John Cena Take After His Loss to the Rock?
The Rock needed to win at WrestleMania 28 for several reasons.
Firstly, there would have been absolutely no point in him coming back if he was just going to put over SuperCena. It would have no benefit for John Cena or The Rock and there would have been uproar.
Secondly, Cena can now use this loss to help develop his character and steer it in a new direction. It is no secret that people are tired of Cena being shoved down their throats and they want a change.
Finally, The Rock can now say he has beaten the past, present, and future of the WWE—and he beat them all at WrestleMania. Hulk Hogan at WrestleMania X-8, Steve Austin at WrestleMania XIX and John Cena at WrestleMania 28.
This leaves one question: Where will Cena go from here?
I have come up with five scenarios that may happen following his embarrassing loss to The Rock.
Back to Normality
1 of 5John Cena could just go back to normality.
Normality is Cena winning every night, Cena being the WWE Champion, and Cena continuing to act as goody-two-shoes as it were.
Now that The Rock is out of the picture, Cena can now concentrate on being “the best he can be”, though this would still be met with horrendous booing from the fans.
The fact is, the WWE does still see Cena as the poster boy for the company during this PG era and this may prevent any heel turn or any other changes to Cena’s character.
Women and children still love him, they make up the demographic and therefore it would be silly to change him.
Taking a Break
2 of 5John Cena could go away for a while.
I realise this is not very likely, but being on the road all the time must be taking its toll on Cena’s body.
I can’t remember the last time he had some time off from working.
Taking a break would give the fans a rest and it would also set up an explosive return for the hated superstar.
It would also allow CM Punk and the challengers for the WWE title to carry the company properly on their own.
Fighting for a Rematch
3 of 5Cena could always ask The Rock for a rematch.
It is a long time before WrestleMania 29 and a lot can change in a year.
Though many people have already speculated what the card may be, The Rock could always face Cena in a sequel.
To add more to the match, it could be for the WWE title as was originally planned for this year.
This rematch wouldn’t have to happen at WrestleMania either—it could happen at SummerSlam.
SummerSlam is the second-biggest event of the year, so a solid WrestleMania rematch might be the perfect way to go.
Heel Turn
4 of 5Will it happen?
John Cena could finally tip over the edge due to his loss to The Rock at WrestleMania.
He may finally embrace the hate and do what the fans have wanted him to do for a number of years now—turn heel.
This would have an impact not only on his own character, but on the WWE as a whole.
He could cut edgy promos again and may become popular eventually.
I wouldn’t hold your breath though.
Feud with Brock Lesnar
5 of 5After Monday Night Raw, it is this option that is looking most likely.
As I’m sure you already know, Brock Lesnar returned on Monday and delivered a devastating F-5 to John Cena, sending a message to him and the WWE Universe.
The Rock has made his point against Cena and now it seems the man who carried the company in the era following the Attitude Era wants to also prove that the past was better.
This should culminate in a match at either SummerSlam or WrestleMania, the same as I suggested for The Rock rematch.
If this is the direction Cena takes, I hope he can pull it off again like he did against The Rock—it will certainly be hard to emulate the same amount of hype.
