NFL Rumors: Bill Parcells Would Be Complete Disaster with Minnesota Vikings

Chris TrapassoApr 4, 2012

The Minnesota Vikings are reportedly pursuing Bill Parcells to become their general manager and head coach, according to The New York Post.

Although the New Orleans Saints are begging him to become their next head coach, the Vikings are not backing off.

Via The New York Post: "Vikings owner Zygi Wilf is putting the hard sell on the former Giants and Jets coach to head to Minnesota and “run the show. Wilf, who has strong New Jersey ties, is simply seeking an upgrade over coach Leslie Frazier and GM Rick Spielman and believes Parcells is the guy."

Mr. Wilf, for the sake of your team and your fanbase, don't do it.

This has major disaster potential.

Your team is headed in the right direction—let the rebuilding process take its course. Leslie Frazier may not be the boisterous, in-your-face head coach you and fans want to see, but it's hard to find a more respected leader and someone who understands defense better than him.

However, he needs talent on defense, of course.

I wasn't completely sold on Spielman's idea to draft Christian Ponder in the first round last year, but the league is led by signal-callers and if there's any position in which you reach, it's quarterback.

More importantly, he isn't faced with a gut-wrenching decision at No. 3 this year.

Draft Matt Kalil. Get your franchise left tackle.

Move on.

Parcells certainly knows his football and his coaching tree is remarkable.

However, he was relatively unsuccessful as a head coach for the Dallas Cowboys from 2003-2006, especially based on expectations there.

As the head decision-maker for the Dolphins, everyone saw his move to grab Jake Long over Matt Ryan in the 2008 draft as an unconventional yet heady decision that would shoot the Dolphins to AFC contention.

Sure, they made the playoffs that season, but look where they are now.

Don't tell me he didn't leave that franchise in disarray.

He did.

I'll admit, John Ireland doesn't help either.

For as much as people see him as this omnipotent football oracle with all the answers, his most recent NFL jobs would be labeled more as failures than successes.

Lastly, and probably more importantly, Parcells is 70 years old, and would be taking over a team, like I alluded to, at the beginning stages of their rebuilding process.

Is he ready to put in the time and effort to grow the Vikings into an NFC playoff team? Or would it make more sense to go to an already established Saints club? Maybe even just stay off the sidelines altogether?

In the end, Parcells would be the big splash that would get excited the masses in Minnesota, but really, he'd be doing more harm than anything else.
