Jacob Tamme to Denver Broncos: Deal Analysis, Grade and Twitter Reaction

Chris TrapassoJun 7, 2018

The Denver Broncos have signed former Indianapolis Colts tight end Jacob Tamme to a three-year, $9 million deal, according to Adam Schefter.

This move came only hours after the team announced they inked former Houston Texans tight end Joel Dreessen.

In 2011, Tamme played in every game for the Colts and caught 19 passes for 177 yards with one touchdown.

Grade: B+

Tamme isn't a premier tight end, but like Dreessen, he's well-rounded. Most importantly, he has a past with Manning as the two formulated a fine rapport in 2010 when Tamme had 67 receptions for 631 yards and four touchdowns.

For the 27-year-old Tamme, this was a stupendous decision. He realized that playing with Peyton Manning gave him the best chance to emerge as a household name at his tight end position.

At 6'3'' and nearly 240 pounds, he's more of an H-back tight end who's a capable blocker. In the past, Tamme demonstrated his ability as a chain-moving tight end, a guy that Peyton can rely on to sit down in the middle of zones and make third-down catches.

Paying him $3 million in annual compensation is about right—the Broncos didn't overpay at all.

Mike Clay of ProFootballFocus.com had an interesting statistic on where Tamme lined up the last two seasons.

Although he won't be used out of the slot often, that shows Tamme's versatility and the fact that he may be used in a variety of positions across different formations next season.

With the two tight end signings, it's unlikely that the Broncos go after one of Manning's all-time favorite targets, Dallas Clark.

VP of football operations John Elway chimed in on Twitter with an expected positive take on the team's recent signings. However, he's probably right.

Dreessen and Tamme will provide exactly what the team needs from their tight-end position. Manning always made use of his tight ends, and that's part of the reason why teams had so much trouble staying with the plethora of receivers he threw to over the years.

Intelligent decisions by the Broncos' front office.
