Why Jeremy Lin Is Perfect PG for NY Knicks' NBA Title Hopes
The pieces are starting to fall into place for the New York Knicks under interim head coach Mike Woodson.
The Knicks are playing good defense and they are sharing the ball on offense, with both Amar'e Stoudemire and Carmelo Anthony becoming active in the offensive attack at the same time. Their overall depth has become a strength.
Yet, with everything going well in the Big Apple at the moment, it all starts and ends with the point guard.
If the Knicks don't get solid guard play, none of the other stuff really matters. For the Knicks to make a run at a title, they need to continue getting what they've received from Jeremy Lin the past five games. If they do, Lin could prove to be the perfect point guard in order for the Knicks to make a run.
With the scoring depth the Knicks have, they don't need Lin to score. But the fact that he can score is big. There's also the fact that his shot selection has improved dramatically under Woodson. As a result, his field-goal percentage is at a solid .484 in his first four games under Woodson, before having a rough day from the floor against Philadelphia.
With Lin's high basketball IQ, he can now pick his spots and take his attempts within the flow of the offense. He's smart enough to realize that.
He's also smart enough to keep whatever momentum the Knicks have right now going. That means playing a system based on defense, ball movement and accountability.
Lin's passing ability, court awareness and play-making abilities give the Knicks something they haven't had at the point guard position in a very long time, and that makes him perfect for this team.
He doesn't have to be a savior anymore. He doesn't even have to be great. All Lin has to do is to continue doing what he's been doing for the past five games, and the Knicks have a chance to be contenders in the Eastern Conference.
