2012 NFL Free Agency: 7 Remaining Free Agents the Dallas Cowboys Should Consider

Peter MatarazzoMar 22, 2012

After the Cowboys epic and frenzied start to free agency, things have seemed to cool down a bit in Jerry World. With Brandon Carr the crown jewel of the 2012 free-agency haul, fans can breathe a little easier and feel a little better about the roster heading into the draft where the Cowboys now have complete flexibility.

So where do the Cowboys go from here? What's there next move? Receiver? Tight End? Despite accomplishing a substantial amount of progress some questions still exist. Now that the Cowboys have had a chance to catch their breath it might be time to re-enter the market and bargain hunt or take advantage of some current free agents still without a landing spot. A lot of free agents either fell victim to the market and were priced out, didn't generate enough interest or are still waiting for the right landing spot.

Regardless of the circumstances, the Cowboys might find themselves in a scenario to be able to land an additional free agent or two that will further solidify this roster. Let's take a look at seven remaining free agents the Cowboys should consider while analyzing their roster.

Antonio Garay, NT, San Diego Chargers

The big nose tackle would be a tremendous fit for the Cowboys as a plug and play guy. He could allow Jay Ratliff to move over to defensive end and would instantly upgrade the Cowboys run defense. I'm a little surprised he hasn't landed somewhere yet, but nonetheless he's still available. He's a player worth kicking the tires on to at least see what his financial demands are. The talent is visible.

Joel Dreessen, TE, Houston Texans

Not the most exciting name left in free agency, but Dreessen lead the Texans with six touchdowns last season. He's a solid tight end that could fit in nicely as competition with John Phillips for the backup role and fill a need as well. He would probably come salary cap friendly as well.

Marcus McNeil, OT, San Diego Chargers

While Tyron Smith and Doug Free are set as the starting tackles, there hasn't been much said about Jeremy Parnell being the swing tackle. While Parnell hasn't seen the field much in Dallas, I'm not sure exactly what the Cowboys have. Still only 28 years old but coming off a season in which he played nine games, McNeill could be intriguing and worth the look.

Tedd Ginn, WR/KR, 49ers

With the 49ers signing both Randy Moss and Mario Manningham in free agency, Tedd Ginn appears to be stuck somewhere in no man's land. Known more for his ability as a kick returner than a wide receiver, maybe this is the player the Cowboys need to improve their anemic return game. I think it's definitely worth the look.

Jacob Tamme, TE, Indianapolis Colts

The Cowboys should be targeting more than one tight end to consider in free agency and Tamme might fit the bill. He had lackluster statistics in 2011, but the Colts were a disaster all year. In 2010 he displayed nice talent while becoming a reliable target for Peyton Manning. He could easily compete for the third tight end role and be counted on to make a play.

Luis Castilo, DE, San Diego Chargers

Castillo is coming off a 2011 to forget but at only 28 years old and out to prove he's healthy, he could be a nice bargain for the Cowboys and provide some depth at defensive line. If he returns to form, Castillo can be a solid producer along the defensive front by helping out with both pressure and stopping the run.

Jerricho Cotchery, WR, Pittsburgh Steelers

He wasn't relied upon much in Pittsburgh, but with Mike Wallace and Antonio Brown around it's tough to get on the field. Cotchey, only 29, still has something left and might be a nice bargain for the Cowboys. He can compete for the third receiver spot and also help with the development of players like Dwayne Harris and Andre Holmes. I just can't see Ogletree being the third receiver after failing miserably last year. The draft is always an option, but Cotchery provides experience and could come cheap.

The Cowboys were able to hit the free-agency market with a full head of steam. After a bit of a quiet period it's time to see what remains. If the Cowboys can target a few more players in free agency it will not only give their draft more flexibility, but it will cement the first part of their plan as a successful one. To me that's successful.
