NFL Free Agent Rumors: Updates on All the Latest Buzz

Ryan PhillipsJun 7, 2018

Now that it appears the Peyton Manning saga has drawn to a close, with the four-time MVP quarterback deciding he wants to play for the Denver Broncos, the rest of the free-agency dominoes appear ready to fall.

Here is the latest buzz we're hearing from around the league regarding free agents and other dealings.

Alex Smith Leading Dolphins On...or Not

San Francisco 49ers free-agent quarterback Alex Smith met with the Miami Dolphins this weekend, but a report surfaced early on Monday suggesting the 27-year-old wasn't actually interested in heading to South Beach.

Then, after the news of Manning's choice broke, it meant that the 49ers were out of it for the 11-time Pro Bowler and Smith was expected to quickly re-sign to stay in San Francisco. The seven-year veteran reportedly has a standing offer of three years and $24 million on the table.

But now, SI.com's Peter King is claiming the Dolphins are actually still very much in it for Smith and that he is "very serious" about the team. I still think his interest in Miami is a negotiating ploy to get the 49ers to send more money his way, but until he lands back by the bay, nothing is certain.

Former Colts to Join Manning in Denver?

Now that Manning has made up his mind, it would make sense if a few former Colts joined him in the Mile High City. Tight end Dallas Clark, running back Joseph Addai and center Jeff Saturday could all be in play for Denver, simply because of their familiarity with the offense Manning likes to run.

Given how flexible Broncos head coach John Fox and offensive coordinator Mike McCoy were with setting up an offense to take advantage of Tim Tebow's strengths in 2011, it would stand to reason that they would let Manning run his own offense with the team. Guys like Clark, Addai and Saturday aren't young, sexy talents, but they could help the rest of the offense during the adjustment period while Manning settles in.

Denver certainly has the cap space to add all three guys, and considering that the free-agent ranks have been thinned out already over the past week, they might be the best options available.

Clark is already expected to be on his way to town, while Saturday will visit the team, and Brandon Stokley is likely to be signed as well.

Wimbley Starts His Visits

Outside linebacker Kamerion Wimbley has started visiting teams, and the top defensive player left on the market will certainly have options. The Oakland Raiders released Wimbley over the weekend because they simply couldn't afford the $11 million he was due in 2012.

The 28-year-old was scheduled to visit the Tennessee Titans on Monday, and he could fit in there at outside linebacker or defensive end. If Wimbley ends up leaving Tennessee without a deal, the Chicago Bears, Jacksonville Jaguars and Seattle Seahawks are all in need of pass rushing help, and the Florida State product can certainly provide it. He has 42.5 sacks in 95 career games and has been remarkably durable.

Don't expect Wimbley to stay on the market very long.
