3 Ways Dwight Howard and Deron Williams Could Unite in Magic Kingdom

Kelly ScalettaJun 7, 2018

Dwight Howard, after a media circus followed him for the better part of the season, opted to sign out of a waiver which would allow him to opt out of his contract.

There had been plans for him to unite with Deron Williams in Brooklyn, but could it work out for the pair to partner up in Orlando? It's not as impossible as it might sound, and time, not magic, might be the answer.

Here are three ways the Nets could land Williams to pair up with Howard.

Wait for Time to Take Its Course

1 of 3

Right now, the Magic are in a ridiculous contract situation and it would take Tinkerbell and fairy dust to get a deal done that would get them the cap space that could land Deron Williams.

However, suppose that Howard and Williams both stick it out to the end of their contracts. Williams gives New Jersey an extra year as Howard is doing.

That moves everything to the offseason of 2013-2014 when Orlando gains an incredible amount of financial freedom.

Turkoglu has a non-guaranteed contract, as does Chris Duhon and Von Wafer. In fact, the Magic have just $15.4 million in guaranteed contracts heading into that offseason.

That would enable both Howard and Williams to ink max deals and play together in Orlando.

Get Someone Else on Board

Williams and Howard wouldn't be the only two players that could hit that summer as free agents. Miami's "Big Three" of LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh also are free agents. Suppose that experiment doesn't work out? Maybe one of them would want to unite with a Williams-Howard tandem in Orlando.

Kobe Bryant will have his contract expire. Suppose the Heat experiment does work out and Bryant still doesn't get his sixth ring. Maybe he would be persuaded to join up with the two of them.

Carmelo Anthony has already shown signs of discontent in New York. Maybe things never get off the ground there.

Other names that hit free agency that year include Amar'e Stoudemire, Rudy Gay, Danny Granger, Luol Deng and Paul Pierce.

In short, there are a number of third options which could potentially unite with Williams and Howard. This could be a big selling point for the two.

Use the Olympics

3 of 3

This, of course, is all long-term planning, but it's what worked before when three players (allegedly) made a determination to unite during the Olympics.

What if Howard gets Williams and Rudy Gay together during their Olympic run and says, "Hey, fellas, I got an idea." He could use the same selling point that Wade used—taxes.

Orlando, just like Miami, is in the state of Florida (duh), which has no state income taxes.

Suddenly, the crazy idea sounds like it has a snowball's chance in Orlando. Granted, it's not an enormous chance, but there is some chance.
