Lakers Trade: Why Ramon Sessions and Kobe Bryant Will Step on Each Other's Toes

Haddon AndersonJun 7, 2018

Rumors about Ramon Sessions heading to L.A. have been swirling for weeks now and the trigger to this deal has finally been pulled.

The Cavaliers have traded Sessions and Christian Eyenga to the Lakers for veteran Luke Walton, Jason Kapono and a protected first round pick.

The Lakers have finally landed an upgrade at their point guard spot and hope Sessions can prove pivotal down the stretch and come the playoffs.

While Sessions does improve their backcourt, there are still some concerns. How much will Sessions help? And will he mesh well with Kobe Bryant?

The second question is of primary concern, for numerous reasons.

For one, Bryant has never really played with a point guard who demands the ball. It's not like Sessions will command the ball the whole game, but he's a distributor and likes to create.

Kobe's accustomed to playing with Derek Fisher, who for years has just dribbled the ball down the floor, handed it to Kobe and then ran to the corner (and he's hit timely threes, which one can't overlook).

Sessions is not this type of player and this could take some getting used to for Kobe. They may even step on each other's toes a few times, especially after Sessions starts trying to do too much and takes dumb shots (he's shooting under 40 percent) or turns the ball over.

Secondly, can Sessions handle playing in a market like L.A. in the same lineup with Kobe Bryant?

Sessions is in his fifth year in the league and he's played for Minnesota, Milwaukee and Cleveland.

And now he's suddenly a member of the Los Angeles Lakers and will share a backcourt with a future Hall of Famer. Somebody's toes are bound to get stepped on here. Kobe may very likely be suspicious of what Sessions can do, while Sessions is trying to prove a point and impress the Black Mamba.

The last concern is if Sessions can really contribute at a level to make the Lakers legitimate contenders. That's what Kobe wants. If that happens, then everything will be fine and dandy.

But what if Sessions just ends up being another failed Lakers point guard experiment like Smush Parker?

If that's the case, there's bound to be tension between he and Kobe.

Things may work out fine between Bryant and Sessions, but the likelihood is that tension will arise at some point. The question is if this tension causes the Lakers to unify and rise to new levels, or shrivel and reveal an overall unhealthy chemistry.
