NBA Trade Rumors: Danny Ainge Should Not Blow Up the Boston Celtics!
Rajon Rondo's name and NBA trade rumors have gone hand in hand since the end of the 2010-2011 season.
Rondo is Now the Man!
As Rajon Rondo goes, the Celtics go. The Boston Celtics still have plenty of guys that can carry the team on any given night; however, it's no longer just the "Big Three" and Rondo.
These days, it's the "Big Four."
Celtics president Danny Ainge better keep this kid in Boston. Rondo is the MVP, heart and soul of this team and the future all rolled into one.
The president has made it clear over the last week or so that Rondo will stay put. If we can take Ainge at his word, then this should be great news for Celtics fans.
What About Blowing Up the Big Three?
I know I said it's the "Big Four" now, but since Rondo is probably staying, we will talk about just the three for now.
Should Danny Ainge blow up the Boston Celtics before the NBA trade deadline? The answer to that question has been changed as much as it has been asked.
When the Celtics stumbled out of the blocks at 5-9, the overwhelming thought among fans was yes. The Celtics then went on to win nine of 10 games, and thoughts of disassembling the "Big Three" didn't seem as obvious.
After the turnaround, the roller coaster took another nose dive heading for the bottom, as the C's lost seven of eight. Now, it's on it's way back up again as the Jekyll and Hyde Celtics have now won seven of nine with a five-game winning streak involved.
Disassembling the Celtics veteran stars, who some might consider a little long in the tooth, is not the answer.
This team can still compete, but they need a big man. With this said, unless we're talking about Dwight Howard, there won't be any centers on the trade block worth giving up, Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett.
Actually, I should slow down a bit. Dwight Howard is probably not going to Boston, but what about Pau Gasol? Is he worthy of the Celtics getting rid of any members of the "Big Three"?
Ray Allen has been the subject of trade rumors, and he just might be gone after Thursday's trade deadline passes.
Bench Needed
Yes, a big man is needed in Boston. A strong bench is a bigger priority, though.
The trade deadline is no time to create a strong bench; it's just not feasible this late in the season. Although, the Celtics situation is fixable, believe it or not. Having a strong bench may not be such a daunting task for the Celtics, even if it is the middle of March.
Before injuries and health issues, Doc Rivers and Ainge had put together a formidable group of reserves.
The team already had second-year man Avery Bradley from the University of Texas, who does a nice job at the point-guard position with his stifling defense, which is the cornerstone of any Doc Rivers team.
The Brandon Bass trade involving Glenn "Big Baby" Davis has worked out, and Mickael Pietrus also fits right in with the three-point-shooting Celtics.
Jeff Green's heart ailment has sidelined him for the year, and now it looks as though veteran center Chris Wilcox may be dealing with the same issue, and missing Jermaine O'Neal has also hurt the Celtics.
If the Celtics can go out and retrieve a couple of players who can fill the voids left by Wilcox and O'Neal, this could go a long way towards helping them make a run in the playoffs.
Stand Pat, Kind Of
The Celtics still have one of the best defenses in the NBA. With great defense and their veteran starters, the Celtics can find themselves as high as three or four seed, come playoff time.
The C's are currently a seventh seed, with only 4.5 games separating them from the third-seeded Orlando Magic.
Leave the key components alone and concentrate on a couple of bench guys. It may not be easy getting decent bench players without some kind of trade bait. Ainge will have to work his magic here, there is no doubt.
If there is any player in the starting lineup that might be expendable, it's probably Ray Allen. He can definitely attract the eye of a team looking for a shooter down the stretch.
