Matt Flynn Rumors: Miami Dolphins Expected to Pursue QB

Ryan PhillipsMar 13, 2012

While the world focuses its attention on the Peyton Manning free agency derby, Green Bay Packers backup Matt Flynn is set to hit free agency Tuesday afternoon as the second-best quarterback on the market.

The Miami Dolphins are expected to make a run at Flynn if they can't land Manning, but the 26-year-old appears content to sit back and wait until Manning signs before he decides on his own future. Unless he receives a "mind-blowing offer," Flynn will take his time in free agency.

This makes sense, because when Manning makes his decision, other quarterback-needy teams will get desperate and the price for Flynn will likely rise. The Cleveland Browns and Seattle Seahawks are expected to bid on the LSU product early, but he will wait until the Dolphins—who have the most available money—get into the mix.

Flynn is obviously a risk for any team going after him, but the Dolphins make the most sense for him. He has a longstanding relationship with Miami's new head coach Joe Philbin, as he was formerly the offensive coordinator for the Packers and helped develop Flynn.

The Dolphins also have a litany of offensive weapons, and if they add a player like Iowa offensive tackle Riley Reiff to an offensive line that already boasts four-time Pro Bowl tackle Jake Long and center Mike Pouncey, they could have one of the league's best units.

For some reason, Manning doesn't seem enamored with the situation in Miami, and that might end up working out well for Flynn. The Dolphins can offer the most money of the potential suitors for him, they can surround him with offensive playmakers and they can protect him with a solid offensive line.

Flynn will likely wait to make a decision, and the Dolphins appear to be a perfect fit for the young quarterback.
