Peyton Manning Rumors: Do the Tennessee Titans Really Want Four-Time MVP?

Ryan PhillipsJun 7, 2018

It has been revealed that Tennessee Titans owner Bud Adams is desperate to sign free-agent quarterback Peyton Manning. The problem is, Titans general manager Ruston Webster, CEO Mike Reinfeldt and head coach Mike Munchak might not be as keen on signing Manning as their boss is.

After all, the Titans did use the No. 8 pick in the 2011 NFL draft on Washington quarterback Jake Locker, and those three men have a lot invested in the kid's development. Manning seems averse to looking over his shoulder at someone who could potentially take his job, which means that his arrival could be contingent on Tennessee finding a new home for Locker.

While Adams may want the former University of Tennessee star, I don't think this will actually happen, because I'm not convinced the rest of the organization is enthusiastic about signing him. ESPN's Adam Schefter went on SportsCenter Tuesday and claimed that the 90-year-old owner was willing to give Manning a "blank check" to play for the Titans. That's a little ridiculous.

Yes, Manning would probably be an upgrade over current quarterback Matt Hasselbeck, but with so many question marks surrounding his overall health, just handing him a ton of money would be foolish.

Hasselbeck posted a 75.2 quarterback rating after Tennessee's Week 6 bye, and he didn't exactly put his roster spot on solid footing. This summer, the Titans claim they will hold an open competition between the 36-year-old veteran and Locker. That not only shows a lack of confidence in Hasselbeck, it also shows a ton of confidence in Locker's ability.

Bud Adams seems intent on entering the Peyton Manning sweepstakes, but the Titans may be best served by sitting this one out and sticking to their plan of developing Locker. This seems like a situation where the front office has a better handle on what's best for the team than the owner does.
