NBA Trade Rumors: Boston Celtics Should Heavily Pursue Josh Smith from Atlanta
Danny Ainge of the Boston Celtics should give up whatever it takes to add Atlanta Hawks forward Josh Smith at the 2012 NBA Trade Deadline.
According to Mitch Lawrence of the New York Daily News, the Celtics are willing to give up parts of the "Big Three" to make this happen.
The Big Three are well-past their prime together. I have been screaming for the Celtics to trade parts of the three before the season started because I knew that the end was near.
A perfect scenario, to me at least, would be to keep Rajon Rondo and add Smith. Both are young players full of immense talent. The Celtics would suddenly have a core to build around for the future.
Obviously, the Hawks have said that Rondo will need to be involved, but if a third team gets in there, you never know. Maybe something will change if no better deal is on the table.
Adding Smith and keeping Rondo wouldn't be unbelievable, but it would be a great start. Rondo is having one of the better seasons of his career and Smith is averaging 17 points and 10 rebounds per game.
People forget just how bad the Celtics were before Ray Allen and Kevin Garnett joined the party. They were dreadful, pathetic and absolutely an embarrassment.
It's crucial that the Celtics limit the downfall of the team by thinking smart about their current situation. The point of this business is to put yourself in the best possible situation to succeed. This core of players aren't at that championship level they are accustomed to so a change needs to be made.
Trading to get younger and more talented while keeping Rondo is exactly what the Celtics should pursue if they could persuade Atlanta into a deal.
