NFL Rumors: If Peyton Manning Goes to Cardinals, the Logical Move for Kevin Kolb

Chris TrapassoJun 7, 2018

How does Kevin Kolb fit into the Peyton Manning saga?

You know, the must-have quarterback who inked a nice little five-year, $63 million deal with the Arizona Cardinals after being traded to the team in the desert last summer?

Yeah, that guy.

As I sifted through the Manning sweepstakes hoopla and feverishly refreshed my Twitter timeline to make sure I didn't miss anything regarding the former Indianapolis Colts quarterback, I found that the Miami Dolphins and Kolb's Cardinals seem to be the front-runners for No. 18's services.

Right now, none of us can sneak inside Peyton's rather large head to know in which direction he's leaning, so for the sake of this article, let's say he decides to go to the warm, dry air of Glendale, Ariz.

Wait, there's already a quarterback under a big-time contract there.

Well, if Manning comes in, sorry Kevin, you step aside. In NFL terms, you get released by the team that so desperately wanted you last season.

What would be next for the talented yet unproven 27-year-old former Houston Cougar?

Without any credible and linkable outside sources to provide insight, all I can give you are Kolb's connections.

The closest ties reside with the Cleveland Browns, a team some say is in need of a quarterback, but one that hasn't been linked to Manning.

Head coach Pat Shurmur was Kolb's quarterback coach during his first two years as an Eagle. Current Browns general manager Tom Heckert was Philadelphia's general manager during that same time period.

The Browns also run a West Coast offense with which Kolb is familiar.

Hmmm...interesting.

The defense isn't up to the bone-crunching caliber we see from the other teams in the AFC North, but the Browns do hold the No. 4 overall pick in this year's draft and could instantly add a legitimate weapon either in the backfield (Trent Richardson) or out wide (Justin Blackmon?) for Kolb.

All of a sudden, the situation in the home of the Rock N' Roll Hall of Fame wouldn't be so dire.

Yes, there are other options, but none more logical than a Kolb-Shurmur reunion in Cleveland.
