Matt Flynn Rumors: Where Flynn Will Land After Avoiding Franchise Tag

Richard LangfordMar 5, 2012

Green Bay Packers QB Matt Flynn makes too much sense for the Miami Dolphins to wind up anywhere else.

That won't be for a lack of options for Flynn. He is going to have plenty of those now that he has nothing standing in between him and free agency.

The Packers could have prevented this from happening by placing the franchise tag on him, but the deadline to do that has come and gone. Flynn will hit the free-agent market.

That will be welcome news to several teams in need of a QB. Or maybe it isn't. Flynn's fate may have been sealed the second the Dolphins hired their new coach. I'll let the rumors explain.

The Columbus Dispatch shared the following rumors

"

Dolphins have been linked to both Manning and Green Bay backup Matt Flynn.

The Browns are not expected to make a big pitch for Flynn, who will command a huge salary and is linked to Miami, where former Packers offensive coordinator Joe Philbin is the new head coach.

"

Nick Eaton of the Seattle PI expressed similar sentiment when discussing the Seahawks connection with Flynn.

"

Matt Flynn, the backup quarterback at Green Bay, has been floated as a potential starter next season for the Seahawks, who are looking to strengthen the position.

The favorite, up until today, has largely been Flynn. But with his coach, Philbin, heading to Miami, his availability may be uncertain.

"

The rumors are believable because they make sense.

By winning six of their last nine games, the Dolphins showed the NFL that this team is not far away from being a contender.

This fact makes bringing in a veteran QB a far more desirable option than drafting a rookie. While Miami could use that train of thought to pursue Peyton Manning, there are some benefits to going after Flynn that give him an edge to land in Miami.

The biggest one is the fact that he is familiar with Joe Philbin. He knows Philbin's offense, and has shown he can execute it with great precision.

The last time we saw Flynn on the field was in Week 17, and he threw for 480 yards and six touchdowns in Philbin's offense.

Flynn would step into Miami and instantly be ready to run this offense, and that would accelerate the learning curve of the entire offense. That is something that no other viable option for the Dolphins brings to the table.

Mark it down: Flynn will be a Dolphin.
