Boston Celtics Trade Rumors: New Regime Should Begin with Ray Allen Deal
The magic and anticipation that welcomed the Big Three has long since passed. What remains is the realization that the best possible thing for the Boston Celtics is to break up the core that delivered a championship title, and it begins with Ray Allen.
Sports Illustrated's Sam Amick reports the Celtics are fielding offers for Ray Allen, and they may be far more plausible than the ones dealing with Rondo. Amick writes:
"Yet for all the talk of Boston point guard Rajon Rondo possibly being traded, some league executives have shooting guard and free-agent-to-be Ray Allen pegged as the most likely to be moved. Sources say the Clippers are interested, having lost Chauncey Billups to season-ending injury and lost out to New York in the J.R. Smith sweepstakes.
"
It's abundantly clear that Rajon Rondo is the player this franchise needs to build around. He may have amazing value as a trade commodity, but his recent game proved he is far more indispensable as a superstar this town can identify with.
Amick goes on to say the deal with the Clippers may not be likely as the Clippers don't have the necessary components the Celtics would want in a deal.
The price seems to be young talent going along with a draft pick. While the Clippers may not be a landing spot, there are other contenders that can use what is the perfect rental player.
The Celtics are old, but that doesn't mean their cast of characters are washed up. Allen is having a fine season as he shoots 48.6 percent from beyond the arc, a career high.
He is also averaging 14.8 points per game on 47.5 percent from the field. That's an instant impact player that can give any contender instant success from the wings.
Finding a sharpshooter that can also function well under the pressure of the postseason is a difficult task. Allen would be the best option moving toward the trade deadline.
If a team offers a draft pick and young talent, they will get a man with ice in his veins that can shoot the lights out of the building. Such a player can be fairly valuable on the way to an NBA title.
