NBA Trade Rumors: Why Deron Williams Is Perfect Fit for Dallas Mavericks

Kelly ScalettaJun 7, 2018

Mark Cuban and the Dallas Mavericks must be waking up every day hoping that Dwight Howard hasn't been dealt to the Nets. Every day that happens, they are one step closer to acquiring both the big man and Deron Williams, and combined with Dirk Nowitzki that team would be as lethal as any in the NBA

It sounds like Williams is going to go to Dallas if Howard doesn't get traded to New Jersey, he'd make a world of difference for the Mavs.

Deron Williams could be the key to bringing another championship to the lone star state. First of all, he's from Dallas and would like to come play at home. Second, he's going to bring Dwight Howard with him. Third, he's the perfect point guard to run the team with a frontcourt of Dwight Howard and Dirk Nowitzki.

Deron Williams is one of the best pick and roll point guards in the league right now. Whether it's scoring as the ball handler, or feeding the ball into the roll man, he's a remarkable two-way talent. His .92 points per play as a ball handler is high, and that's without a real roll partner to dish to for most of the season.

Meanwhile Dirk Nowitzki is one of the better screen players in the league and as one of the best spot-up shooters to boot. When the Mavs run a pick play for Nowitzki, he gets the ball up high tends to shoot it from outside the paint while moving away from the rim.

Nowitzki's source of scoring chances is important, so put a pin in that thought while I move on to Howard for a moment.

Howard isn't one of the best roll players in the NBA. He's the best roll player in the NBA. Unfortunately he doesn't have a point guard capable of consistently getting the ball into him. Deron Williams passing skills would instantly improve Howard's offensive game.

The difference between Howard and Nowitzki is that while Nowitzki gets the ball high on the pick and roll, Howard tends to get it low in the paint. Most of his shots come at, or near the rim.

Look at the shot chart comparison below. Notice where Howard's shots come from and where Nowitzki's come from. That's a lot of floor to cover between two players.

Then just for good measure throw in the fifth best three point shooting team in the NBA. Jason Terry and Vince Carter combine for more than three three-pointers per game.

What do you get when you combine one of the best low post scores, one of the best midrange shooters, one of the best three point shooting teams and one of the best distributors of the game? You get an improved version of last year's NBA Champion.
