Braylon Edwards Free Agency Rumors Latest Sign of New York Jets 2012 Indecision

Erik FrenzJun 3, 2018

Raise your hand if this conversation sounds familiar: "Where do you want to go eat?" "I don't know, where do you want to go?"

If you're in a relationship, chances are you've been through this once or twice.

It's all out of fear of a worst-case scenario—being stuck with something you don't like. Who wants to get up and leave a restaurant after already sitting down to eat a meal?

What do you do if the second restaurant is even worse than the first? Do you go back and ask for your food back?

According to Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News, the New York Jets could do just that with free agent wide receiver Braylon Edwards.

"

The Daily News has learned that the Jets are interested in bringing back free agent wide receiver Braylon Edwards, who was an integral piece in Gang Green’s success in 2009 and 2010. ...The Jets are looking for a replacement for Plaxico Burress, who won’t be re-signed when free agency begins on March 13 and said Tuesday that he would love to play for the Eagles.

"

While gauging their interest in returning to the first restaurant, the Jets have to wonder if the food has gone cold. As Mehta points out, Edwards battled knee and shoulder injuries in a very rough 2011 season in which he had 15 receptions, 181 yards and no touchdowns in nine games. All career lows.

I'm not saying bringing back Edwards is a bad decision, necessarily; it would have been smarter for them to keep him. Almost anyone could have told you that it would have been in the Jets' best interest to keep him. At 29, he's still young enough to get healthy and return to form.

However, this is just more evidence that the Jets, as redundant as it sounds, need to be decisive in their decision-making process.

It wouldn't be so bad if this was the only recent example of indecision on behalf of the Jets. However, it's not.

Since the end of the 2012 season, the biggest example has been the Jets' stance on quarterback Mark Sanchez. It would be different if the statements changed from one press conference to another—that would indicate that at least the team was nearing a decision. Instead, general manager Mike Tannenbaum was on ESPN New York radio with Michael Kay (via ESPN's Rich Cimini) and flip-flopped within the same breath.

"

It's really important that we always try to improve the team. With that said, I expect Mark Sanchez to be our quarterback next year. But when we have opportunities to improve our team, that's what we're going to do.

"

The Jets know what they want, to some degree—they want to be a ground-and-pound style offense that plays solid defense by putting pressure on quarterbacks. The problem comes in making all the other decisions when it comes to reaching the team's ultimate goal of a championship. Specifically, in terms of personnel.

Michael Lombardi of NFL Network pointed this out during the combine. When you think of the Giants, you think of big, fast players. What do you think of with the Jets? Besides "tough," which is what every team looks for in a team?

The Jets know what they want, but they need to decide how they're going to get it. Indecisive tendencies are a relationship weak point, and are a team-building weak point, as well. It's time for the Jets to pick a restaurant and eat there.
