UFC on FX 2: Court McGee and The Ultimate Fighter's 10 Best Success Stories
When it comes to success stories in the UFC, The Ultimate Fighter series has produced not only great fighters but great representatives for the sport.
In fact, one couldn't find a better role model to represent MMA than TUF alum Court McGee. McGee's overcome so much in his life, including a deadly battle with drugs. Now, he's a successful UFC fighter.
The show has produced great moments and great fights, but these are the best success stories coming out of the UFC's landmark show.
10. Gray Maynard
1 of 11Though he came up short against Frankie Edgar, Gray Maynard has progressed so much in the past couple of years.
Maynard showed some promise on the show with his spectacular wrestling, but he quickly evolved into a well-rounded fighter in the UFC and earned himself a title shot after defeating Kenny Florian in Florian's hometown at UFC 118.
That led to his two title fight classics with Edgar. Though he didn't win either fight, he certainly showcased great standup and put the rest of the lightweight division on notice.
9. Roy Nelson
2 of 11Finally, Roy Nelson gets the accolades that he's earned throughout his career.
For years, Nelson showed the world that he was one of the best heavyweights in MMA during his stint in IFL. When he got the chance to prove his worth on the 10th season of TUF, he shut everyone down with his wrestling and striking.
Though Nelson has lost three out of his last four fights in the UFC, he has become a crowd favorite for his heart and willingness to trade punches with some of the division's elite strikers.
8. Michael Bisping
3 of 11Love him or hate him, Michael Bisping has done a lot for the sport of MMA.
Bisping is a huge star in England. Even if you can't stand the guy, you can't deny that this guy is one of the division's best fighters.
Bisping proved this in his last fight with Chael Sonnen. Though he lost the decision to Sonnen, he gained a lot of respect from the MMA community. Bisping has yet to win a title, but if he continues to progress, he will get that coveted title shot sooner than later.
7. Diego Brandao
4 of 11Diego Brandao doesn't have to worry about living in poverty anymore.
Brandao openly stated that he was fighting to get his mother a house in Brazil. With his victory in the TUF 14 finale, Brandao was able to do just that.
Brandao is exactly what America is all about. America is about bettering yourself and making your life better, and with a skill set like Brandao's, he was destined to win the show.
Expect big things from this Brazilian in his UFC career.
Junie Browning
5 of 11Just kidding. Sorry, I couldn't resist.
6. Kenny Florian
6 of 11When you talk about the greatest fighters that have never won a championship, Kenny Florian has to be near the top of that list.
Florian failed in his title fights against Sean Sherk, B.J. Penn and Jose Aldo, but he's beaten some really great opponents inside the Octagon.
With victories over Takanori Gomi, Joe Stevenson, Roger Huerta, Clay Guida and Joe Lauzon, you'd be a fool to call Florian's career anything but a success.
5. Diego Sanchez
7 of 11Diego Sanchez is a success story not only because he's had tremendous success in the UFC, but he's battled some demons and overcome them.
Sanchez recently stated in an interview with Bleacher Report that he fell into the trappings of fame and battled the demons like drugs and alcohol.
Luckily for Sanchez, he regained focus on his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, and he's right back to giving the fans a show they won't soon forget.
Seriously, Sanchez is one of the most exciting fighters in the UFC. He always puts on a great show for the fans.
4. Rashad Evans
8 of 11Rashad Evans is the best fighter to ever emerge from the Ultimate Fighter series.
Evans won the light heavyweight championship from Forrest Griffin at UFC 92, and he holds impressive victories over top-tier competition.
Evans has beaten the likes of Chuck Liddell, Quinton "Rampage" Jackson, Thiago Silva, Phil Davis, Tito Ortiz, Griffin and Michael Bisping.
Evans will get his chance to recapture the championship when he faces Jon Jones at UFC 145, in a fight that every hardcore MMA fan has been dying to see.
3. Matt Serra
9 of 11After winning the fourth season of the Ultimate Fighter, Matt Serra pulled off the biggest upset in MMA history.
Facing the "Michael Jordan of MMA," Serra scored a TKO victory in the first round against Georges St-Pierre and shocked the world.
What's so great about the upset is the fact that the fourth season of TUF was meant to resurrect a fighter's career, and that's exactly what happened with Serra. The moment where he dropped GSP will live forever in MMA lore.
2. The Evolution of the UFC (Bonnar/Griffin)
10 of 11The UFC wouldn't be what it is today, if it weren't for Forrest Griffin and Stephan Bonnar.
You know the story about how both of these fighters saved the UFC from crashing and burning and turned them into a powerhouse, but did you know that this fight almost didn't happen?
UFC president Dana White said in a recent interview that Bonnar was almost kicked off of the show for leaving the house for a liquor store.
Had he kicked him off the show, the UFC might not even be around right now. That in itself makes it a remarkable story.
1. Court McGee
11 of 11No victories and no titles can ever be considered more valuable than winning your life back.
McGee overcame a personal battle with addiction. He started taking pain killers, which eventually led to a cocaine and heroin addiction.
After overdosing and nearly losing his life, he took to the gym and after winning the 11th season of the show, he's won two fights in the UFC.
McGee is currently on an eight-fight winning streak, but winning the battle of addiction will always be his greatest victory.
