Lakers Rumors: Acquiring Dwight Howard Would Be Wrong Move for Lake Show
With the All-Star game over, Dwight Howard's future with the Orlando Magic is as unstable as it has ever been. The Los Angeles Lakers are going to do all they can to make sure they are in on the star center, but looking at what they would have to give up there is no way they would be a better team.
According to Josh Robbins of the Orlando Sentinel, there was a falsely reported three-team deal that would send Howard and others to Los Angeles, Pau Gasol and Andrew Bynum to Orlando and the Toronto Raptors getting pieces from the Magic.
"The scuttlebutt is that the Magic would send Howard, Hedo Turkoglu and Jameer Nelson to the Lakers and the Magic would receive Andrew Bynum and Pau Gasol. A third team, the Toronto Raptors, could be part of the deal or in a separate trade with the Magic, sending point guard José Calderon to Orlando.
"
While you can see why Orlando would want that deal, it does not make sense for the Lakers. They would be giving up two legitimate stars for one superstar and two mediocre players.
You like the idea of pairing Howard with Kobe Bryant, but this would give them less depth than they have now—and they are already incredibly thin.
Of course, times are desperate for the Lakers. There is even talk that the Magic have no interest in Bynum as a trade chip for Howard. That doesn't make sense for them, especially since he is the best center that they could potentially get in a deal.
However, the Lakers have to examine what their biggest problem is right now and try to address that. They have no problems in the paint, with Bynum and Gasol. Rolling with those two for the rest of the year is going to make them a better team.
Finding a point guard capable of running the offense that Mike Brown wants and more depth off the bench are what this team needs to make a serious run at the NBA Finals.
Trading away two stars for one superstar and two role players is not the way for the Lakers to get there. Howard is not the piece that they need, nor is he worth everything that they would have to give up to bring him to Hollywood.
