NBA Skills Challenge: Tony Parker Channels Experience for Shocking Win
Tony Parker finished in last place in his two previous appearances in the NBA Skills Challenge, but on Saturday he beat out the young ball-handling guards of the NBA to take home the trophy.
Parker posted a time of 32.8 seconds in the finals of the competition, beating out Deron Williams and Rajon Rondo for the win.
"I was calmer. The first time I did it, it was the first time they did the event and I was with Jason Kidd and Gary Payton and I was nervous," Parker said.
First of all, that was a long time ago if Gary Payton is playing in any All-Star competition, which shows just how experienced Parker is in the NBA.
That was the 2003 Skills Competition, by the way.
He used that experience Saturday for a big win, proving he can play with some of the best guards in the NBA despite not being linked with Eva Longoria.
The trophy will do for now, I'm sure.
During the skills competition, Parker hit five of six passing attempts and drained both jump shots he took from the top of the key.
Coming into the event, the sexy picks were Rondo or even Williams, but Parker stole the show, being patient and accurate through the entirety of the challenge.
Experience at its best.
Poor Kyrie Irving had a rough go of it, as his skills attempt was particularly ugly, and Russell Westbrook's was not much better.
In the end, the schooling Parker got from coming in last place the last two years helped in ultimately becoming the champion Saturday night. He slowed the game down and won with poise, something the others should take note of next season.
Parker will hope to take the success from this weekend into continuing a very nice individual season for himself and maybe a run for his Spurs team the rest of the way and into the playoffs.
