Michael Beasley to the Lakers Doesn't Solve Anything

Kevin Van PeltFeb 21, 2012

Rumors have circulated that the Los Angeles Lakers and the Minnesota Timberwolves have had talks about trading Michael Beasley to L.A.

The Lakers are in the middle of a playoff hunt and have been surrounded by trade rumors all season. Most of these trades have circulated around Pau Gasol. However, this is one of the few trades that don't.

While it is unclear who would be involved in the trade, Hoopsworld.com has said that the talks between the two teams and Gasol have not been brought up since preseason.

The main problem the Lakers need to solve is at point guard. Derek Fisher has shown that he is not the same player that he used to be. Steve Blake has had some injuries this year and is a nice player to have on the team but is not a starter.

The Lakers are mediocre the small forward position as well. Ron Artest (Metta World Peace) and Matt Barnes have not done well on offense but have contributed nicely on the defensive end.

Adding Beasley to the mix would, in theory, just flip the production around. He would add to the offense slightly but take away from some of the defense.

Beasley was the second overall pick in 2008 and has not lived up to that potential. His shooting percentage has lowered each year he has been in the league and is only averaging 12.6 points a game this year.

The Lakers also need to consider that they have a rookie in Devin Ebanks who can play the small forward position as well. At the beginning of the season, Ebanks was in the starting lineup while Andrew Bynum was suspended. He fit in well with the team and showed plenty of potential.

After Bynum came back, Ebanks has had hardly any playing time.

Hopefully the Lakers do not go any further with these trade talks for Beasley. The Lakers first must decide what they are going to do with Gasol and get control of the team they have now before making a pointless trade for Beasley.
