Tim Tebow: Will Brady Quinn's Potshots Damage Tebow's Public Persona?

Eric BowmanJun 1, 2018

Brady Quinn never got his chance this past NFL season, and now he's essentially calling out Tim Tebow's skills. Unfortunately for the former Notre Dame quarterback, this won't harm Tebow in any way, shape or form.

Update: Quinn has taken to Twitter to respond to the comments made in the GQ article.

"

The comments attributed to me in a recent magazine article are in NO WAY reflective of my opinion of Tim and the Broncos. Tim deserves a lot of credit for our success and I'm happy for him and what he accomplished. Most importantly, he is a great teammate.

That interview was conducted three months ago, and the resulting story was a completely inaccurate portrayal of my comments. I have addressed my disappointment with the writer and have reached out to Tim to clear this up.

I apologize to anyone who feels I was trying to take anything away from our Team's or Tim's success this season.

Job well done by Quinn to quickly react to what was posted by him in the GQ article. Below, you can read what all he said and how I felt it sounds really bitter and that Quinn might no longer be in Denver next year.

In the March issue of GQ, Quinn is one of the many NFL guys discussing Tebow's rise as a starter. He takes a cheap shot at Tebow, and it wouldn't surprise me if his comments have something to do with his future with the Denver Broncos.

"We've had a lot of, I guess, luck, to put it simply," Quinn said.

Enter Quinn haters here.

Tebow is extremely popular in the NFL, and while he does have his fair share of haters, the support around him is immense. Quinn even points this out, saying the fans chanting Tebow's name had an impact on his starting role:

"

I felt like the fans had a lot to do with [Tebow starting]. Just 'cause they were chanting his name. There was a big calling for him. No, I didn't have any billboards. That would have been nice.

"

There's no denying that Tebow had the love of the Broncos fans, and that he was incredibly lucky at times this past season.

However, Tebow showed excellent leadership during his time as a starter. He put the team on his back and led the way to Denver's first AFC West title and playoff appearance since 2005.

Tebow showed that he could win in the NFL, even if it wasn't pretty for the majority of the game. Winning is all that truly matters, and that's something Tebow knows how to do.

The most striking comment Quinn made though had to do with religion.

"

If you look at it as a whole, there's a lot of things that just don't seem very humble to me. When I get that opportunity, I'll continue to lead not necessarily by trying to get in front of the camera and praying but by praying with my teammates, you know?

"

This is a bold statement from Quinn because it hits to the core of what Tebow is all about. Surely Tebow prays with his own teammates. Once the Broncos' star player gets wind of this, I would expect him to talk to Quinn about what he had to say.

Calling him out about his skills is one thing, but here it sounds as though Quinn is saying Tebow is just putting on a show for the camera, which couldn't be further from the truth.

With these comments, Quinn just sounds enormously bitter, and that won't bode well for him moving forward.

On Monday, Broncos head coach John Fox told the Denver Post that he believes the team will add two quarterbacks to compete with Tebow.

"Numbers wise that's accurate. Who, what, where, when, what market—it's still way too early how we get those quarterbacks," Fox said.

Quinn is a free agent this offseason, and while there is a possibility the Broncos re-sign him, these comments could hinder his chances of coming back to Denver.

Clearly Quinn would love to compete with Tebow, but if the Broncos wouldn't even put him in for an injured Tebow during the AFC Divisional playoff game against the New England Patriots, it's unlikely they believe in Quinn's future.

Since Tebow is beloved by all in Denver, expect more hate from the Broncos' faithful to come Quinn's way. The fans had somewhat of an impact with Tebow starting (the sloppy QB play from Kyle Orton was the main reason), so naturally the team management will hear what the fans have to say about Quinn.

After this GQ interview, it's doubtful the Tebow lovers will have nice things to say about Quinn.

Tebow is always going to be a big hit with the NFL fans, so Quinn can say virtually whatever he wants about the highly admired QB, and it won't damage Tebow at all.
