Davonte Neal to Notre Dame: Ranking College Football's 2012 Wide-Receiver Class

Randy ChambersJun 7, 2018

Now that Davonte Neal has finally made a decision and has ended up picking Notre Dame, we can begin to recap this year's players. Neal was the top remaining recruit on the board, and with him deciding on a school, we can now focus more on the 2013 class.

But, before we begin to do that, this year's class of wide receivers is pretty deep. You have several different types of wideouts, from speedsters to the tall guys that become instant threats in the red zone. Many of these receivers will make an immediate impact and will likely soon take over the college-football world.

Here are the top-10 wide receivers from this year's class and where they ended up going.

10. Darreus Rogers

1 of 10

Committed to: USC

Rogers is a natural wide receiver with great strength. He isn't exactly huge at 6'2", 194 lbs., but he has great leaping ability and can go up and get the ball with the best of them. He's a north-and-south runner with the ball in his hands and a tough-nosed kid that will fight for everything on the field.

One of the more underrated commits this season for the Trojans.

9. Thomas Johnson

2 of 10

Committed to: Texas A&M

Johnson is like many receivers in this year's class—not the biggest option on the field, but quick off the line and great at picking up chunks of yards after the catch. You can use him in many different ways, and he'll become a solid contributor for the Aggies as they head into the SEC.

Probably the most underrated receiver in this year's entire class.

8. Deontay Greenberry

3 of 10

Committed to: Houston

Greenberry is one of the bigger wide receivers in this class at 6'3", 180 lbs. He also runs the 40 in the 4.5 range and is extremely strong when battling defenders for the ball. He's a great player that can kill you either with his great size or his above-average speed.

The Cougars hit the jackpot with this landing—although it was surprising—considering he had offers from several BCS schools.

7. Bryce Treggs

4 of 10

Committed to: California

Treggs is one of those players that just goes out there and does his job. He's not a flashy player, although he does make plays and makes plenty of people miss. He runs remarkable routes and has great hands.

Like a lot of receivers in this class, he's not the biggest, but he's a playmaker, and that's all you need in the Pac-12. Great pickup for the Golden Bears.

6. Cyrus Jones

5 of 10

Committed to: Alabama

The Crimson Tide finally got the playmaker at the receiver position that they've lacked for several seasons. Jones isn't going to impress anyone with his size at 5'10", 185 lbs., but his speed is something to take into consideration. He gets downfield in a hurry, and if you blink, you've likely missed the tackle.

He may need to bulk up a bit to last full-time in the SEC, but there's no question the talent is there for this young man.

5. Cayleb Jones

6 of 10

Committed to: Texas

Jones is only 6'2", 185 lbs., but he plays much bigger than that. He's not afraid to make catches in traffic or go across the middle of the field to pick up a tough first down. He has extremely strong hands and will make jaw-dropping catches look easy.

This is a huge pickup for the Longhorns, as this program slowly tries to become one of the premier teams in college football once again.

4. Davonte Neal

7 of 10

Committed to: Notre Dame

The reason Neal is this high is because of his versatility. He can play wide receiver or be a shutdown cornerback as well. As a receiver, though, he runs outstanding routes, and even with his size at 5'9", 175 lbs., he's not afraid to go across the middle.

This is a fantastic pickup for the Irish, and he'll likely become one of college football's biggest playmakers in a year or two.

3. Shaq Roland

8 of 10

Committed to: South Carolina

Roland has played a lot of other positions, so when he takes the field for the Gamecocks as a receiver, he'll need to work on a few things. But overall, the potential is limitless for this young man. He has probably the strongest hands in this class and can go up and get it with the best of them.

He's a fantastic athlete and can get down the field in a hurry.

2. Stefon Diggs

9 of 10

Committed to: Maryland

Diggs lacks size at 6'0", 185 lbs., but makes up for it with elite speed and playmaking ability. Get the ball in his hands, and he's a threat to take it the distance every time. He can do so many things, including line up at running back and play special teams.

He has solid hands and will improve this Maryland offense immediately.

1. Dorial Green-Beckham

10 of 10

Committed to: Missouri

There was no question as to not only who is the top receiver in this class, but arguably the best overall player in the 2012 class. Green-Beckham is a freak of nature at 6'6", 220 lbs., who runs the 40 in the 4.4 range. His size alone makes him a great weapon to have, and he should be able to produce right away—even in the SEC.

It's going to be extremely fun to watch him play and to see if he can live up to his potential.
