New York Knicks: ESPN's Jeremy Lin Headline Sparks Racial Debate
Early Saturday morning, ESPN.com’s mobile website posted a headline referencing the New York Knicks suddenly sizzling point guard, Jeremy Lin, that has people up in arms and calling for swift action.
ESPN’s own Kevin Ota released this statement on the headline, offering an initial reactive apology for the insensitive headline.
The term “Chink in the Armor” is used in sports fairly regularly to describe a flaw in an otherwise strong unit or skillset.
Whether the term was used derogatorily is unknown; however, the reactions it has caused are similar to those that followed Don Imus’ infamous comments regarding the Rutgers Women’s Basketball team, ultimately leading to his termination from his MSNBC show Imus in the Morning.
ESPN editor-in-chief Rob King had this to say via twitter:
"There's no defense for the indefensible. All we can offer are our apologies, sincere though incalculably inadequate.
"
Lin has dealt with the slurs all throughout his career, and according to him, it even happened while at Harvard.
"It's everything you can imagine," Lin says. "Racial slurs, racial jokes, all having to do with being Asian." He even heard it at Ivy League games: "I've heard it at most of the Ivies, if not all of them."
ESPN says they are reviewing the situation to determine appropriate disciplinary action to ensure this does not happen again.
