Knicks Rumors: Baron Davis' Anticlimactic Return Won't Be Worth the Wait

Jeff ChaseJun 7, 2018

When the New York Knicks signed point guard Baron Davis this offseason after he was released by the Cleveland Cavaliers, many were hoping that he would be the missing piece to what the team needed with forwards Amar'e Stoudemire and Carmelo Anthony already in place.

The Knicks already had a plethora of point guards, but that served them well as Davis has yet to hit the floor. The team first went with rookie guard Iman Shumpert, but as of late they have turned to undrafted-turned-sensation Jeremy Lin.

The country has been overrun with Linsanity, as the former Harvard grad has been lighting it up over his last six starts. While Lin is having all this success, the Knicks' assumed starter has been sitting on the bench watching to what may be his demise.

According to Alex Raskin of CBS Sports, Davis' return is finally looking to be coming this week, but in reality what does that even mean for the club?

Lin has been playing at a level that some have even gone to say MVP-like, while others right now think it is a spurt that will come to an end. Either way, coach Mike D'Antoni is not going to take out his current star in favor of a bum who hasn't shown any significant contributions over the last few seasons.

In 15 games with the Cavs last season, Davis did average 13.9 points per game. But think about who was on that team. It wasn't guys like Lin, Anthony or Stoudemire—not to mention the recent addition of guard J.R. Smith—so who knows how he would really perform in this offense.

That doesn't even take into account his health. At 32 years old, he is nine years older than Lin, as well as having gone through many more injuries.

When the Knicks signed Davis, they definitely didn't see this situation coming about. Honestly, nobody did. But now that it is a reality, Davis' eventual arrival really won't add much more to what this Knicks team will need.

It will have to be seen if Davis even returns to the court in the next week, but if he does, it will remain to be seen if he will actually be looked at to bring in any sort of impact whatsoever.
