Dallas Mavericks: What Will It Take to Lure Dwight Howard and Deron Williams?
The Dallas Mavericks appear set on saving money for the upcoming offseason. This is a wise maneuver, especially with both Dwight Howard and Deron Williams potentially exploring where they will take their talents.
Williams is a Dallas-native and clearly a perfect fit for the Mavs. Current point guard Jason Kidd's career is about complete and it would be fitting for him to pass the baton to Williams.
Meanwhile, Howard would also mesh wondrously. Quite frankly, where on planet earth wouldn't Howard mesh wondrously?
While the possibility of landing these two megastars sounds delightful to Mavs fans, what will it take for this to happen?
The truth is, money will likely not be the major issue. In the past, other superstars have revealed that money isn't always the chief factor (i.e. the "Big Three" in Miami taking less money in 2010).
What's most important to Williams and Howard is playing in a big market where they can win. They want to be placed into a core that will contend, while Howard would also prefer to stay in the southern heat.
Currently, teams around the league are morphing into an array of dynamic duos and "Big Threes."
LeBron James has Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh, Chris Paul has Blake Griffin, while Kevin Durant has Russell Westbrook.
It's only logical for Williams and Howard to follow suit with this sort of dynamic.
What's more, Dallas seems to be the perfect destination to create this dynamic. It's a large market, the weather will keep Dwight happy and they'd even get to team with Dirk Nowitzki for a few more years before his career wanes.
What's not to like?
The truth is, it's going to take both of them desiring to venture to Dallas. There's no reason to think that one will come without the other.
Why would Williams want to sign with the Mavs if he's not assured Dwight will accompany him? Most of the current members of the Mavs' roster are aging, and the franchise appears destined to rebuild unless they inherit the likes of both Williams and Howard.
Believe it or not, this is an all or nothing scenario. Howard and Williams will essentially want written consent from each other before they sign with Dallas.
However, if they do both consent to come to Big D, what a splash that will be.
At the end of the day, the question is whether the Mavericks can emulate the Heat of the summer of 2010.
That's a lofty hope, but it's the only hope Mavs fans should hold onto right now. It's misguided to think they can hopefully at least gain one of these superstars, because the league is clearly not working like that anymore. Superstars are now aligning together and ganging up on the rest of the league.
Dallas has the market, the weather, the money and all the intangibles to develop a "dream team," but is all that enough to lure Howard and Williams?
Mark Cuban is surely going to go for it.
Think big, Mavs fans. Dallas could soon create their own version of "Yes. We. Did."
