NBA Trade Rumors: Celtics Wrong to Commit Season to Aging Roster

Gabe ZaldivarFeb 16, 2012

The Boston Celtics are quite pleased with the current state of basketball being played by their aging roster. All hopes for a trade to spice up Celtic life can be ignored as Boston continues to be delusional about their offseason prospects.

Trade rumors continue to be bandied about and most center around Rajon Rondo. It seems that a trade may be the last place the Celtics look to get bigger and better.

Sports Illustrated’s Chris Mannix joined The Dennis and Callahan Show Tuesday morning of this week. The report comes courtesy of WEEI.com

Mannix stated the following on the current mindset of the Celtics front office.

"

I honestly think the Celtics believe they are not out of the running for a guy like Dwight Howard. I know Boston believes they can't get him in a trade, but I really believe the Celtics think they can sell Dwight Howard on the city and on the team if he makes it to free agency...They can tell him they have Rajon Rondo in place, a great point guard, a top-five point guard, Paul Pierce under contract for the next few years and all this cap space to give him a max deal.

"

At 15-12, Mannix believes the Celtics would rather hold their ground with the roster as it is rather than rock the boat.

That would be foolish considering the age and form of this team. They are a shade better than they were a couple weeks ago, but they still battle with age nightly.

If they are ever going to get a return on aging star like Kevin Garnett or Ray Allen, now would be it. I also don't share in Mannix's optimism over Dwight Howard going to Boston.

It has been clear from the start of the season that Howard has his affections, and they rest in Los Angeles, New Jersey or Dallas

The Celtics are fighting a losing battle on two ends.

For one, they are setting up camp with a roster that cannot win a title as is currently constructed. The other comes in the form of their hopes that they can start rebuilding in the offseason.

At that point, a good portion of their roster can walk, and they get nothing in return.

They can continue to play for the bottom of Eastern playoff teams. They may hit their stride and rise from seventh to sixth or fifth, but they are fighting a losing battle.

The time to deal is now.
