Dwight Howard to the Miami Heat? Yes, This Could Happen

Haddon AndersonJun 7, 2018

Can you imagine LeBron James and Dwight Howard on the same team?

Well, it's not outside the realm of reason.

A James and Howard duo could be as fortuitous as the league has ever seen.  They'd certainly be mentioned in the likes of Magic Johnson-Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Michael Jordan-Scottie Pippen and Kobe Bryant-Shaquille O'Neal.

So how could this idea become a reality?

ESPN NBA analyst Chris Broussard recently presented a handful of ideal Dwight Howard trades.  An emphasis in all of Broussard's ideas was what the Orlando Magic could receive for "Superman," and quite frankly, the scenario featuring Dwight heading to South Beach lands the Magic with the most in return.

Broussard's Howard-to-Miami deal looks like this:

Miami Heat Receive

C Dwight Howard, F Hedo Turkoglu, F Ryan Anderson

Orlando Magic Receive

G Dwyane Wade, F Chris Bosh

Wow, talk about a blockbuster deal.  And truthfully, this deal would be beneficial for both squads.

While the Heat would struggle to wave goodbye to Wade and Bosh (particularly Wade, who's been there nine years and won a title in '06), the opportunity to seize Dwight Howard is too alluring to resist.  It would hurt to lose two of the current "Big Three," but they would replace those two with one monster.

Possessing a dominant big man is a game-changer, evidenced throughout history (Abdul-Jabbar, Hakeem Olajuwon, Shaq, Tim Duncan, etc).  Teaming such a big man with LeBron James is beyond fearsome.

Plus, Broussard's proposed deal also features Ryan Anderson heading to Miami.  Anderson's currently averaging 16 points per game, and he's only 23.

His ability to shoot the three ball (averaging almost three treys a game on 42 percent from downtown) could prove deadly, as teams double-team Howard in the low post and crash on James' penetrations.

It's obviously clear that Miami is already a title contender.  Most people consider them the front-runner for the 2012 title, but acquiring Howard gives them a lineup that in Broussard's words is "downright scary."

What makes this deal compelling is the fact that Orlando would have to consider it.  No other proposals for Howard are going to feature two All-Star-caliber players in the midst of their prime.  Sure, they may be able to acquire a young center like Andrew Bynum or Brook Lopez, or a host of youthful talent from a team like Chicago, but no other proposals can compete with snagging Wade and Bosh.

Wade and Bosh would help the Magic to remain an elite team.  While they likely wouldn't be able to win a championship with LeBron and Dwight in the way, they would still fill the seats, create plenty of hype and most likely be a top-four seed in the East.

Orlando appears like they're willing to remain patient with Dwight Howard, almost as if they're holding onto the slim hope that he'll re-sign there long-term.

But if Miami called and expressed interest in this offer, I don't see how the Magic could not entertain the idea.

Both teams would be wise to contemplate this idea from Broussard.  For Miami, their contemplation of this idea should become a legitimate pursuit, because gaining Superman's powers would most likely result in a dynasty.
