NBA Rumors: Blake Griffin Needs to Do Slam Dunk Contest to Keep Event Relevant
Raise your hand if you want to see Blake Griffin dunk over Kendrick Perkins at this year's NBA Slam Dunk Contest.
You can all put your hands down now. And while that dunk probably won't happen, Griffin appearing in the Dunk Contest is at least possible, which is really the only reason many people would want to watch in the first place.
As of last Thursday, Griffin was clear on the fact that he didn't intend on participating in the Dunk Contest. He even mentioned that "Those dunk contests aren't my thing," which sort of broke my heart, because I really thought Griffin and the Dunk Contest had a good thing going.
But according to Josh Robbins of the Orlando Sentinel, he may be changing his tune.
""I'm not even really worried about it right now or thinking about it, to be honest," Griffin said after the Clippers finished their shootaround for their game tonight against the Orlando Magic at Amway Center.
"I haven't been approached yet, so we'll see what happens with that. We'll see what they're going to do, and I'll guess I'll make a decision."
"
Please do the dunk contest, Blake Griffin. Sure, we enjoy watching you perform ridiculous feats in NBA games, do Kia commercials that are more clever than they seem or appear in Funny or Die videos.
We loved how excited you were when Chris Paul was traded to the Los Angeles Clippers, spawning the nickname Lob City.
But a huge part of your brand is your ability to throw down huge dunks, and the best place to showcase that is at the Slam Dunk Contest—an event that is becoming less and less relevant by the year.
As each year passes, the masses grow less enchanted with the event. I hear more people lamenting a lack of creative dunks or a complete absence of star power in the event. It's bad enough players like LeBron James don't participate. We can't afford to lose you too, Blake.
Do it for the fans. Do it for the sanctity of the Slam Dunk Contest. Hell, do it for Kia again, I don't care.
You're our only hope, Blake Griffin. With great dunking ability comes great responsibility.
Oh, and if you could get Kendrick Perkins to stand just in front of the basket for one of your dunks, that would be totally awesome. Or maybe you could just dunk Nate Robinson. You decide.
But please do the contest. Please!
