Ohio State Football Recruiting: Stefon Diggs Would Lead OSU to Big Ten Dynasty
It may be hard to imagine Ohio State really improving their recruiting class, but there is one big fish out there that would turn their great recruiting class into an epic one: Stefon Diggs.
According to John Buzby of Maxpreps, Diggs is pushing his commitment back, possibly as late as Feb. 10. Diggs' Rivals profile lists Ohio State as one of the star receiver's final options.
He is the perfect kind of player receiver for Urban Meyer's spread offense. The Buckeyes won't win the Big Ten this year because of a postseason ban. But if they land Diggs, this will be the only Big Ten title that they won't win during his time in Columbus.
Diggs has the combination of size and speed that will work wonders in the spread. He is a big enough player to be used as a perimeter blocker on run plays.
That is an important part of the spread, as the nature of the offense means that there is very little protection in the middle of the field. When you run the ball, it has to be outside of the tackles. Without good receivers to seal off the outside, it is very hard to run.
Of course, the blocking isn't Diggs' primary skill. He is a 6'0", 185-pound receiver with 4.4 speed. That makes him a valuable downfield threat. Not only will that bring big plays to him, but it also opens the field up for other receivers, as well as runs.
Should the Buckeyes land Diggs, he will join fellow Rivals 5-star recruits Adolphus Washington and Noah Spence, as well as 13 (and counting) already committed 4-star players that are a part of Ohio State's recruiting class.
They are already loaded on both sides of the ball without Diggs, which explains their No. 3 ranking. Adding him would be an embarrassment of riches for a school that hardly needs it.
Diggs is a dynamic player that would bring the right amount of toughness to Ohio State. What is better for him is that the talent around him is so good that defenses will not be able to focus on Diggs.
As a result, his numbers will be huge.
Urban Meyer's first recruiting class is going to dominate the Big Ten. With two 5-star defensive ends, it's hard to imagine many points being scored by Buckeye opponents.
Landing Diggs would lock up the offense. In doing so, it would make the race for future Big Ten titles extremely boring, which will be just fine for the people in Columbus.
