Lakers Rumors: Los Angeles Must Gamble on Ramon Sessions or Risk Losing Him
The Los Angeles Lakers reportedly have an interest in Cleveland Cavaliers backup point guard Ramon Sessions, and if they don't make a move soon, they could risk losing the chance to acquire him all together.
Hoopsworld reports:
"However, the Lakers aren’t the only team expressing interest in Sessions. Many teams have been calling to see what the Cavaliers plan to do with their back-up point guard. Sessions’ agent, Jared Karnes, will speak with Cavaliers general manager Chris Grant this week to discuss his client’s future.
"
Other teams being interested means other offers being made, and other offers being made means someone can outbid Los Angeles. That's why they need to end the auction soon, so they have the best chance of landing Sessions.
This is a pretty simple deal. They can acquire Sessions for draft picks. They have their own first-round pick and they have Dallas', which is top-20 protected. They can offer Cleveland whichever of those two is the better pick, which gives Cleveland what they want, picks.
That's it. The Lakers aren't likely to find anyone better. Gilbert Arenas certainly is not a better option, though there are some Lakers fans who would like to believe that this is Golden State Arenas. He's not. He's a shadow of his former self and comes with a a litany of personality issues.
Sessions is a quality passer and a pretty horrible defender. Synergy had him raked dead last among all point guards last year. This year, though, he has shown some improvement, yielding an opponent Player Efficiency Rating of just 11.7 compared to 18.7 last year.
Similarly, his defensive numbers from Synergy have dropped from 1.0 points per play down to .91. In other words, he's still not a great defensive player, but neither is Derek Fisher.
Granted, there are some gambles defensively, but a defensive coach like Mike Brown could help him continue to improve. Remember, he is just 25 and can continue to improve.
Simply put, the kid has warts, but nothing that a little metaphorical Compound W can't help. Getting him helps the Lakers offense more than anyone else is going to. The Lakers need to finish the deal, and finish it soon.
