NBA Rumors: Gilbert Arenas Better Option Than Ramon Sessions for LA Lakers
Picking between Gilbert Arenas and Ramon Sessions is like deciding between which Kardashian sister is your favorite. The time has come for the Lakers to choose one, and it has to be Arenas.
When you are banging around in the refuse of NBA guards, you are going to uncover that there are no perfect fits at this time of year.
The Lakers have exhausted the marquee trades, but that doesn't mean the lesser of two evils is inaction. Derek Fisher is on the wrong side of old and Steve Blake is injured once again. That has mandated Mike Brown to throw out second-rounders as if they were ready for such things.
The ship may not be sinking, but it's definitely still sitting at the harbor waiting for someone to get it going.
Yahoo! Sports' Adrian Wojnarowski reports the Lakers have inquired about the Cleveland Cavaliers' Ramon Sessions. The guard is playing part-time thanks to the emergence of Kyrie Irving.
At the same time, The LA Times' Mike Bresnahan suggests that Lakers officials are keen on bringing in NBA castoff Gilbert Arenas.
It's the kind of ridiculous measures that make you wonder if Allen Iverson will one day get a call from Mitch Kupchak, but I kid.
Arenas and Sessions are real solutions to stagnant problems.
Ramon Sessions
Let's forget the output from Sessions for a moment. He has played in a limited role this season and is averaging 9.1 points per game and shooting 34 percent.
That is not what intrigues the Lakers. He is a great pick-and-roll guard who sees the floor well and can deliver great consistent passes. I know...I told you neither of these guys was all that sexy a solution.
The problem for me is that Sessions himself doesn't score all that well. He is an iffy outside shooter and couldn't defend a wadded-up tissue.
The Lakers need a guard that can actually stop the opposition from scoring, and if not, he needs to be able to command some load of the points himself. Sure, he is a great passer. So is Luke Walton, but what good has he done?
Gilbert Arenas
This brings me to Agent Zero, at least the ghost of the agent himself. Arenas may not ever get back to his All-Star scoring form, and his defense would be just as tenuous coming off a long layoff, but the ceiling is far greater than Sessions.
The Lakers know what they are getting with the Cavaliers guard, and it isn't much. With Arenas, the gamble is far more intriguing.
It's time to roll the dice and hope you score big, because the Lakers are not scoring much at all right now.
Arenas is only a year removed from scoring 17 points per game for Washington, and then he was traded to the Magic, where all hell broke loose.
I say go big or go home. The Lakers are not going to win the title with the slim pickings they have now, or with Sessions as their solution at point guard.
However, if Arenas can regain most of what he lost, this would be the biggest steal of the year. Sure it's a dream, but that is all we can do during a season that has been a nightmare of mediocrity.
