National Signing Day 2012: Programs on Verge of Banner Day
National signing day is not what it sounds like. It's not a day when all of the country's football recruits come out and announce their decisions at once. It's more of a deadline.
Personally, I think it would be cool if NSD was a day where all the recruits came out and announced their decisions at the same time, but oh well. One way or the other, the recruiting circus is going to come to a head on Wednesday, and you can count me among those who will be relieved when it does.
The truth is that not a whole lot of programs are going to be making noise on NSD. Recruits will be going all sorts of places, but most programs have already gotten their share of commitments.
A couple programs, however, are heading towards a loud finish on NSD. Below is a list of schools that you're going to want to keep your eye on in the next 24 hours or so. They're poised to explode.
Honorable Mention: Missouri Tigers
Missouri's recruiting class doesn't look all that great compared to the rest of the SEC, but it's pretty full. I'm not expecting them to sign a whole bunch of recruits at the last minute.
The reason I'm including them as an honorable mention is because it's looking like the Tigers are going to secure one really big commitment. Nothing is official yet, but reports came out on Monday that Dorial Green-Beckham, the No. 1 recruit in the country, had decided to go to Mizzou.
Again, nothing is final, but the signs point towards Green-Beckham signing with Mizzou. That would be huge.
Auburn Tigers
Auburn has spent much of the last couple weeks filling out its coaching staff. In the meantime, the program's recruiting efforts were pretty quiet.
Too quiet, if you ask me. Gene Chizik's class is simply too small, but it's a good bet its numbers will grow on NSD.
We know that Auburn is eyeing some big-name recruits, namely Eddie Goldman, Stefon Diggs and Ronald Darby. The Tigers probably won't land all three, but landing one or two of them is by no means out of the question. Their signatures would give Auburn's class a huge boost.
There will be other signatures, too. Per Rivals.com, Auburn's recruiting class consists of just 15 recruits. That number is going to go up.
Iowa Hawkeyes
The Hawkeyes were pretty quiet for a while there, but they've come on strong in recent weeks, securing a couple of commitments that, while not huge, are certainly solid.
Iowa has secured enough commitments as far as numbers are concerned, but the program could stand to upgrade its overall quality. Compared to the rest of the Big Ten, Iowa's recruiting class doesn't quite measure up.
But the Hawkeyes still have some pretty big names on their radar, including Aaron Curry. They're also circling Ole Miss commit C.J. Beathard, who would be a good get.
Iowa can't hope to catch up with the schools at the top of the Big Ten, but it can at least put itself on their radar.
Nebraska Cornhuskers
It seemed like Nebraska did nothing for a span of several months, but Bo Pelini is starting to round out his recruiting numbers. He's secured three commitments in the last 10 days.
But Nebraska still needs numbers. The Cornhuskers only have 14 commitments, which is too few. Nebraska is going to have to get a few more before calling it a season.
The one guy Cornhuskers fans are hoping for is Andrus Peat, who is widely considered one of the best offensive tackles in the country. It just so happens Andrus' brother, Todd, already plays for Nebraska.
Other big names are on Nebraska's radar, including the aforementioned Mr. Curry. If the Cornhuskers secure just a couple of their targets, they will have had a huge finish.
Oregon Ducks
When word came out that Chip Kelly was in consideration for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' head coaching job, Oregon's recruiting pretty much stopped altogether.
It picked up again as soon as Kelly announced that he was coming back. Oregon hosted a handful of notable recruits this past weekend, and the Ducks scored a huge victory when Arik Armstead chose to play for them on Sunday.
It's too bad for the Ducks that Armstead's good buddy Shaq Thompson will not be joining him in Eugene. That was a popular theory, but Thompson chose to go to Washington late on Monday night.
Oh well. The Ducks have other recruits on their radar, and it's a good bet that some of them will be attracted to the idea of playing for Kelly.
USC Trojans
The Trojans already have a rock-solid recruiting class, and it got even more solid when Zach Banner committed to USC on Monday.
You can rest assured that USC isn't done yet. Lane Kiffin has secured some pretty good commitments, but he's only secured 13 of them.
That number is going to go up. USC has some big names on its radar, and Banner's commitment could open the floodgates for other top-shelf recruits to follow him.
Just watch and wait. The Trojans are not finished yet. Not even close.
