UFC on FOX 2 Results: Did UFC on FOX...SUCK?
Did the UFC's first actual card on Fox suck?
Some are thinking it's so, but unlike the first card on FOX, the teaser event that saw only Cain Velasquez face Junior Dos Santos on FOX and no prelims airing to fill in the time, the people ripping on the first full Fox card might actually have a point.
Even though the overall card didn't suck, it's an area of concern when the best fights on the fight card happened on a channel that very few can even afford.
Lavar Johnson earned a Knockout of The Night bonus for his win over Joey Beltran, Charles Oliveira's debut ended with a calf-crusher on Eric Wisely and a Submission of The Night bonus and Evan Dunham's win by Doctor Stoppage over Nik Lentz saw him split a Fight of The Night bonus with Lentz, so all in all, the Fuel TV portion of the card delivered.
That's all fine and good, but when the main card happened, that's when some fans were wondering if what they saw was seriously what the UFC advertised.
Now, to the credit of the three fights on FOX, they were technical bouts and should not have been expected to turn out as anything less than technical bouts, but it's not so much the technical aspect of some of the bouts that has some upset as much as it is the way some of them ended.
Just to recap:
Chris Weidman won a split (but really unanimous) decision over Demian Maia is a bout that saw the weight cut take a hit out on Weidman's endurance late, while Maia just seemed lost in what was seen as the worst performance of Maia's career.
Chael Sonnen lost two rounds to Michael Bisping on many scorecards, but somehow walked away from the fight with a 30-27 score in a unanimous decision win over the TUF 3 winner.
Finally, Rashad Evans took Phil Davis to school for twenty-five minutes in a bout that should have seen a finish.
Some fans were probably disappointed that Davis was just proven by round 3 as a case of a guy that has the potential to be elite, but got thrown to the wolves before he was truly ready, but what does it say when some consider Evans' win to be lackluster?
Any time a main event seems to underwhelm, some wonder if the card suffered for it, but did the fact that the three main-card bouts all ended in decisions attribute to the belief that the card truly sucked?
Some might still say so, but that all depends on how it looked from where you were sitting.
