4 Reasons the Chicago Bulls Don't Need Dwight Howard

Haddon AndersonJun 7, 2018

Let’s say Dwight Howard adds the Bulls to his wish list of destinations, which is very plausible.  The initial thought of he and Derrick Rose on the same team sounds like real-life NBA Jam.  There would be plenty of dunks, alley-oops, oohs and aahs.

More importantly, it would result in multiple championships.  Right?

While the thought of Rose and Howard on the same squad sounds unquestionably potent, would the Bulls really be better than they are now?  The Bulls currently possess the league’s best record, with their main strength being depth.

Here are four reasons why making a play for Howard is actually not the best decision for the Bulls.

1. Depth

Consider what the Bulls would have to give up.

Most likely Luol Deng, Joakim Noah, either Omer Asik or Taj Gibson and a draft pick.

If Orlando bites at such a deal, the Bulls would certainly feature a fearsome starting five (Rose, Howard, Carlos Boozer, Ronnie Brewer, and Richard Hamilton), but their depth would suddenly be slim.

Currently, the Bulls can insert Asik and Gibson for Noah and Boozer and not lose a step.  This is a luxury that gets taken for granted.

Come playoffs, it will be more valuable to have an array of worthy big men than one monster who could get in foul trouble or perhaps get injured.

2. Chemistry

Chicago’s chemistry right now is second to none.

It would obviously not be too difficult for Dwight to find his niche with the Bulls, but their style of play would inevitably need some adjustments – adjustments that are unnecessary.  If the machine is running well, why tweak it?

3. Second Fiddle to D-Rose?

Would Superman really be okay playing second fiddle to Derrick Rose?

The likelihood is that things would not flow between these two as well as advertised.  It would at least take some time.  It could potentially delay their title run–a delay that’s unwarranted because they can contend with the team they have right now.

4. Luol Deng

Something must be said about parting ways with Luol Deng.

Deng is now going to miss some time due to a torn ligament in his left hand, but prior to this injury he was producing like an All-Star.  Having him healthy is instrumental for a title run because he provides a “do-it-all” player on the wing.

If Deng were dealt in a trade, filling his void would not be easy.

Plus, the number one obstacle in Chicago’s way is the Miami Heat and possessing Deng’s versatility to help contain Lebron James is absolutely vital.  Deng’s absence would be wildly exposed against the star-studded cast from South Beach.

Adding Dwight Howard is certainly an idea for the Bulls to inspect, but the cost is too much.

Furthermore, the Bulls have something special brewing and altering the recipe right now would be more foolish than anything.  There’s no reason to think that a championship is out of their reach this year, and there’s also no reason to think that trading for Dwight Howard instantly makes them better.
