Avery Bradley Finally Showing the Boston Celtics He Can Contribute
Reserve guard Avery Bradley has had the support of Danny Ainge ever since the Celtics drafted him in the first round in 2010. Although he has never had the opportunity to benefit from a consistent offseason training program due to an injury his rookie year and the lock out his sophomore year, he is starting to develop into a strong contributor for Boston. Ainge has insisted that all he needed was playing time to develop into the potential he saw, and with Rondo out the last few games he has been able to see the court.
Avery averaged a decent 4.4 points on 39.2 percent shooting, 2.2 rebounds, 1.5 assists, and .8 steals per game. These numbers are not overly impressive but he is improving with his larger role averaging 6.75 points , 3.75 rebounds, 3 assists, and 1.75 steals per game. Some of the increase in stats has to do with the increase in playing time, but the caliber of player he is facing up against is much higher.
The truly inspiring aspect of Bradley's game has been his defensive effort every minute he spends on the floor, suffocating the opposing point guard from developing any real offensive rhythm. His full court one man press is causing immense frustration for his opponents and forcing them to turn the ball over more often or rush the offensive set up leading to worse shot opportunities. His efforts have been noted in every game he has played in over the last month and is gaining praise from teammates and opponents alike.
In the game against Orlando Avery had an inspiring defensive game, setting the tone for the Celtics who kept Orlando to a franchise low 56 points on 24.6 percent shooting. He registered three steals and one block, but was extremely influential in contributing to the 23 total turnovers the Magic produced. Van Gundy even recognized that "Avery Bradley set a great tone." He went even further with a strong statement about that team, saying, "That's the most dominating defensive performance I've ever had against me."
This is a good sign for the recently wavering Celtics, as it appears at least the younger talent may be developing. If Bradley can continue to have a strong defensive presence and improve his offensive game he will prove to be an extremely effective reserve guard. The Boston Celtics need Avery Bradley to continue his development and show that he is ready to help this team rebuild to championship contending team.
