Why Kyrie Irving Will Have a Better Career with Cavaliers Than LeBron James

Kelly ScalettaJun 7, 2018

Kyrie Irving is not going to be LeBron James no matter what people want. He just doesn't have close to the physical attributes that James has.

Can he have a better career with Cleveland though?

There is some reason to think that he could for one reason: He has a chance to be around better players. The Cavaliers had two lottery picks this year. Between now and 2015, they have their own four picks and they have Miami's first-round pick in 2013 and 2015. They have Sacramento's first-round pick this year (which promises to be worthwhile).

Then you couple that with the fact hat when you get past the initial "guffaw" that is likely to come from anyone declaring that Irving and James deserve to walk on the same planet, at least statistically there's reasons to believe that Irving is having a better rookie year than James or Chris Paul.

Now, I'm not going to swear by those numbers as the end all and be all of all things predictive, but it does show one thing: At this stage, Irving is looking like a pretty darned good pick.

The Cavs have themselves a nice young player in Irving, and while fellow rookie Tristan Thompson hasn't been quite as great a find, he is averaging 16 points per 36 minutes and has a PER of 14.6. There's a lot of room to improve there.

Add the two more lottery picks that are likely to come and you have the foundation for a very good team. The Cavs have the opportunity to be a solid team, and deep, unlike the Cavaliers team that ran the floor with LeBron James.

Furthermore, in the post-lockout era, there's the chance the Cavs can keep everyone and not lose their Carlos Boozers and LeBron Jameses.

The Cavaliers have a great chance to build a championship-caliber team, led by Kyrie Irving as one of the next great point guards in the era of point guards. If the Cavaliers win even one ring under Irving, he will be viewed as having he greater career, regardless of what else happens.
