Penn State Video: Students Hold Vigil in Support of Joe Paterno's Failing Health
College football fans and Penn Staters flocked to Beaver Stadium on Saturday night after it was reported that former Nittany Lion football coach Joe Paterno was in serious condition.
Paterno has experienced complications from lung cancer treatment, according to ESPN and multiple other sources.
Supporters paid their respects with a vigil throughout the stadium and Happy Valley as seen in the above video.
Fans, students and alumni stood quietly with candles and memorabilia to salute a sports leader like no other.
JoePa has developed a cult-like following over his years at the university, and deservedly so. No head coach has been so loyal to one program for so long.
The 85-year-old has experienced quite a hectic past few months however, which included the release of a grand jury report detailing child sexual abuse that went on under Paterno's watch at Penn State.
Paterno's former defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky has since been charged with multiple counts of child sex abuse and currently awaits trial.
Shortly after the facts became known in early November, Paterno was fired and diagnosed with lung cancer just a week later.
Paterno coached at Penn State for more than half of a century, 61 years, nearly 46 seasons as head coach. He is a legend not only in Happy Valley, but of college football.
