Why Aaron Rodgers' MVP Campaign Takes a Hit with Shocking Loss to Giants

Ryan PhillipsJun 7, 2018

Aaron Rodgers had a remarkable season for the Green Bay Packers. Even though Rodgers and his team suffered a shocking defeat to the New York Giants in the playoffs on Sunday, he is still almost certain to win the NFL's MVP Award.

Still, after a shaky performance in what was a bad loss, some voters are sure to pause before filling out their ballots.

Rodgers was almost perfect during the regular season, as he completed 343 of 502 passes (68.3 percent) for 4,643 yards, with 45 touchdowns and just six interceptions. He led the league in yards per attempt (9.25), and his quarterback rating of 122.5 set the NFL's single-season record.

He also was in charge of a Packers team that went 15-1 during the regular season.

Still, late in the year New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees made a push in his own MVP campaign as he broke Dan Marino's single-season passing yardage record by throwing for an astonishing 5,476 yards.

Experts began to waver from Rodgers, but frankly I don't think Brees should get the award over the Green Bay signal-caller.

Anyone who was on the fence may have been knocked off to one side or the other based on the fact that both Green Bay and New Orleans were upset in the divisional round. The thing about Rodgers' performance is that his normally reliable receiving corps caught a case of the drops, as they mishandled several key passes.

The Packers finished the game with a comical eight dropped passes.

While some will look at Rodgers' lackluster performance on Sunday and decide to vote elsewhere for the MVP, I simply think that is being short-sighted.

The 28-year-old quarterback was the best player in the NFL all season long, and though his almost-perfect campaign took a hit on Sunday, he should still get the award.
