NFL Playoffs 2012: Assessing the Title Odds of Every Remaining Team
With the final four teams set, who will be making the trip to Indianapolis is getting clearer.
Each team remaining is one win away from making it to the Super Bowl. Two wins will lead the team to immortality.
It sounds simple, but only one team can win it all, and that team will have to beat two elite teams to do so.
Each of the four remaining teams has a legitimate chance to win the Super Bowl, but the only promise that can be made is that there should be some entertaining football on Sunday.
Here are the title odds for each remaining playoff team.
Baltimore Ravens
1 of 4We learned this weekend that defense still wins championships, and the Ravens might have the best defense left in the playoffs.
Still, the Ravens face an uphill battle, as they have the worst offense left.
Joe Flacco was brutalized by Houston's pass rush. Even when he had time to throw, his receivers couldn't catch the football. Even Ray Rice was completely stonewalled.
Even the best of defenses will only be able to slow down the Patriots, rather than completely stop them. That means that some offensive production will be necessary to get to the Super Bowl.
The Ravens haven't proven they have enough offense to do so, even against a horrendous defense.
If they get to the Super Bowl, the Ravens will be facing one of two fierce pass rushes. Plus, both the 49ers and the Giants have more efficient offenses than the Ravens.
It could happen, but the Ravens' title odds are not good.
San Francisco 49ers
2 of 4For the past five years, the Super Bowl winning quarterbacks have been Aaron Rodgers, Drew Brees, Ben Roethlisberger, Eli Manning and Peyton Manning.
Is Alex Smith really in that same caliber of quarterback?
Smith had a tremendously efficient year, but he simply is not good enough to carry a game for an extended period of time. What he did against the Saints was amazing, but it will not be a trend.
Still, the 49ers' defense is fantastic, and they will force any game the 49ers play to be a close affair.
When crunch time is on, though, I would take Eli Manning, Tom Brady and even Joe Flacco over Alex Smith.
The stars will have to align for the 49ers to win a championship with such a limited passing game.
New England Patriots
3 of 4The Patriots have one of the best offenses in NFL history, and furthermore, they have arguably the best quarterback to ever play the game.
With Tom Brady at quarterback, the Patriots are always dangerous. Their offense features dynamic talent at receiver and tight end, and they have a better running game than most realize.
With so many weapons at his disposal, Tom Brady will always be able to put up points.
The Patriots' problem is that they can't stop other teams from putting up points. After two offensive juggernauts fell at home, the Patriots have to be concerned that their defense will be their downfall.
Luckily, the Patriots get to face the worst remaining offense in the playoffs in the Baltimore Ravens. They should be able to slow down the Ravens enough to advance to the Super Bowl.
From there, the Patriots will have to play a much more balanced team. But with no defense to speak of, the Patriots probably won't be able to bring home a championship.
New York Giants
4 of 4After two very impressive playoff victories, the Giants look poised to repeat their title run of 2008.
Eli Manning and the Giants offense is clicking at the right time, and with one of the best receiving corps in the NFL, teams will struggle to cover all of the Giants' weapons.
Defensively, the Giants are forcing passers to constantly make mistakes with their fierce pass rush. With Osi Umenyiora, Justin Tuck, Jason Pierre-Paul, Chris Canty and Matthias Kiwanuka, the Giants can dominate opposing offensive lines.
The lack of running game could be a concern, but Eli should be able to carry the offense on his own.
Of all the teams left, the Giants look the most poised to take the championship.
